Louis Tomlinson Vulnerably Reveals He’s Still Grieving Liam Payne

Louis Tomlinson has opened up about the pain of losing his former One Direction bandmate Liam Payne.

In a candid cover interview with Rolling Stone UK, Tomlinson admitted that Payne’s death hit him harder than he ever expected.

In the piece published on Tuesday, Oct. 7, he called it “impossibly difficult” to cope with the loss.

Tomlinson shared that, though he’d faced personal loss before, this was the first time he had ever lost a close friend — a fact that made the grief particularly raw.

“It was really, really, impossibly difficult for me to deal with losing Liam,” Tomlinson bravely shared. “Naively, I thought that because at this point, I’m relatively well versed in grief for my age, that it might soften the blow. [That was] super-naive. It’s very different. I’ve never lost a friend before.”

The timing made their milestone — the 15th anniversary of One Direction — “uncomfortable,” he added, because celebrating without Payne felt both poignant and unfair.

“It was really uncomfortable, actually, the 15th anniversary, because the [collective] feeling to celebrate is as important, if not more important than ever, on behalf of Liam,” Tomlinson told the outlet.

Tomlinson Posted a Touching Tribute When Payne Passed

Tomlinson shared a heartbreaking social media post when the tragic news of Payne’s passing was released.

Payne tragically died after he fell from a balcony in Buenos Aires on October 16, 2024.

“Liam was somebody I looked up to everyday, such a positive, funny, and kind soul,” he wrote.

The “Lemonade” singer added how he believed Payne was the heart of the band.

“And for the record, Liam was in my opinion the most vital part of One Direction. His experience from a young age, his perfect pitch, his stage presence, his gift for writing. The list goes on. Thank you for shaping us Liam,” Tomlinson added.

Nicole Scherzinger Opens Up About Her Final Texts With Liam Payne

As the anniversary of Payne’s passing is in a few days, former “X Factor” judge Nicole Scherzinger opened up and revealed new details about the last time she communicated with Payne before his tragic passing.

In an interview with The Times of London, she shared that their final exchange — on October 16, 2024 — was casual and lighthearted.

She described it as “just chit-chat,” underscoring how ordinary conversations can gain profound meaning in hindsight.

Scherzinger recalled how deeply she admired Payne, saying, “I just adored Liam. He had such a good heart.”
