DWTS Alum Opens Up About MS Journey & Hollywood Comeback

For Selma Blair, her Multiple Sclerosis (MS) diagnosis in 2018 was both a curse and a blessing. It was a blessing because the “Dancing With the Stars” alum finally knew the cause of her decades of symptoms.

“I have probably had this incurable disease for 15 years at least,” she wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “And I am relieved to at least know. And share.”

She went on to compete in Season 31 of DWTS. While she bowed out early, she was proud of herself for trying. However, her MS journey has also been filled with frustration as she’s struggled with managing her symptoms. In a recent interview with Stellar, Selma revealed that she’s been in remission for 2 years while reflecting on her Hollywood career.

Selma Blair Reflects on Career Near-Misses and Gaining Ambition

Like many other actors, Selma began in theater in New York City. “[Then] my agent told me, ‘You should move out to LA for pilot season.’ I think every pilot I tested for, it was between me and one other person,” she told Stellar. “Everything was almost. Almost.”

She recalled losing the role of Joey Potter in “Dawson’s Creek” to Katie Holmes. Even more etched in her mind is her loss of the role of Marion Silver in “Requiem for a Dream” to Jennifer Connelly.

“[Darren Aronofsky] wrote me a letter,” she explained. “I had said, ‘I’d give my left arm to be in your movie!’ And he’s like, ‘Well, you don’t have to give your left arm! The next one I do …’ And that was like 30 years ago.”

Despite Darren never following up, Selma was getting roles. She co-starred in “Cruel Intentions” with bestie Sarah Michelle Gellar. She starred in “The Sweetest Thing” with Cameron Diaz and Christina Applegate. And she played one of the lead roles in Guillermo del Toro’s “Hellboy.”

“I was happy at the time to get [the parts] I got,” she admitted. “I didn’t have a huge amount of ambition, I was happy to be in a supporting role. And now I am a little greedier.”

Selma Blair’s Ambitious Comeback Slate Revealed

Selma’s new ambition, combined with being in a good place healthwise, means that she has three films on the horizon. “Stay Forte” is a war drama based on the October 7 attacks. “There There” is written and directed by the Polish Brothers, and “Silent” is a supernatural thriller by Doron and Yoav Paz.

“We’re thrilled to be collaborating with Selma Blair on this unique project,” the Paz brothers told Variety. “We believe the best horror emerges from remarkable character building. That’s why Selma is perfect for this movie. You care about her and her journey. When you care about the characters, the frightening moments hit much harder.”

“There are some [roles] coming up that I never saw coming,” Selma told Stellar. “I am excited about getting back into movies.”
