‘Dilbert’ Creator Passes Away at 68 & Tributes Pour In

Scott Adams, the cartoonist and writer best known as the creator of the long-running comic strip Dilbert, has died at age 68, according to TMZ.

The sad news was announced on Tuesday, January 13.

Adams passed away following a lengthy battle with prostate cancer, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most influential humorists of his generation — a creator whose satirical take on office culture resonated with tens of millions of readers around the world.

Adams’ Ex-Wife Shared the Sad News

His first ex-wife, Shelly, revealed the news during a live stream on “Real Coffee with Scott Adams.”

Shelly read a letter from Adams during the announcement, according to The Daily Mail.

“If you are reading this, things did not go well for me,” the letter began.

It continued, “I have a few things to say before I go. My body failed before my brain, I am of sound mind as I write this January 1, 2026.”

If you wonder about any of my choices for my estate or anything else please know I’m free of any inappropriate influence of any sort, I promise,” Adams wrote.

He also said that he was accepting “Jesus Christ as my lord and savior, and look forward to spending an eternity with him. The part about me not being a believer should be quickly resolved if I wake up in heaven.”

Dilbert became a signature voice in American pop culture for its sharp, humorous depiction of corporate life.

The strip’s dry wit and recognizable characters — from the perpetually optimistic Dilbert engineer to the oblivious Pointy-Haired Boss — tapped into universal office experiences, earning Adams both critical praise and a devoted global readership.

Over the years, the comic appeared in thousands of newspapers, spawned books, television adaptations and a wide range of merchandise.

Adams Only Had Days Left

TMZ broke the news on Monday, January 12, that it was believed that Adams only had a few days left.

His ex-wife told the outlet that after he had become bedridden and was receiving round the clock care.

She added that herself, her sister, Adams’ stepdaughter and nurses have not left his side.

In May, Adams revealed he had an aggressive form of cancer, according to Variety.

“I have the same cancer that Joe Biden has. I also have prostate cancer that has also spread to my bones, but I’ve had it longer than he’s had it — well, longer than he’s admitted having it,” Adams said at the time. “I expect to be checking out from this domain sometime this summer.”

Fans Express Their Sadness

After the news was announced, fans quickly took to social media to express their sadness over Adams’ passing.

“RIP. Dilbert was one of the all-time great American comics.”

Another added,” See ya on the far side Scott! RIP.”
