Ahead of HBO’s upcoming premiere of “A Knight of Seven Kingdoms,” fans are looking closely at what’s next in the “Game of Thrones” franchise. “House of the Dragon” continues as the cornerstone spinoff, while other projects remain in development — including new live-action concepts and multiple animated series.
Below is where each “Game of Thrones” spinoff currently stands.
‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff ‘House of the Dragon’ Renewed Through Season 4
“House of the Dragon” remains HBO’s biggest “Game of Thrones” spinoff to date. Set roughly 200 years before the original series, it centers on the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons following the death of King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine).
The series has been renewed beyond its current run. Showrunner Ryan Condal has said the story will end with season 4.
‘A Knight of Seven Kingdoms’ Premiereing in 2026
“A Knight of Seven Kingdoms” is the next spinoff set to hit HBO. The series adapts George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas and takes place about 90 years before “Game of Thrones.”
The show follows two travelers as they move through a Targaryen-ruled Westeros. HBO announced the project years ago and officially ordered it in 2023. The series is currently in post-production and is expected to premiere in early 2026 after being delayed from an earlier release window.
‘Aegon’s Conquest’ In Development
A “Game of Thrones” project about Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros is still in development at HBO. The story would follow Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they set out to conquer the Seven Kingdoms and begin the Targaryen dynasty.
The project has not been officially greenlit yet, and HBO has reportedly explored different ways to tell the story, including as a full drama series or a large-scale feature-style production. Casting and release timing have not been announced.
Jon Snow ‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff Still in Limbo
The status of HBO’s “Jon Snow” sequel remains unclear, but recent comments suggest the idea may not be completely dead.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin explained why he has been cautious about “Game of Thrones” sequels, noting that his planned book ending will differ from the HBO series.
“[The book’s ending is] going to be significantly different,” Martin told The Hollywood Reporter. “Some characters who are alive in my book are going to be dead in the show, and vice versa.”
Jon Snow himself, Kit Harington, previously suggested the project was no longer moving forward. In a 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harington said, “It’s not happening — and not happening anytime soon anyway.”
Still, THR reported that HBO has not completely shut the door on the Jon Snow spinoff. The outlet said the project has been revived creatively, with “Drops of God” writer Quoc Dang Tran coming aboard, and noted that the story is still being developed and could potentially expand to include Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams on “Game of Thrones”).
The report added that HBO is approaching the project carefully and is “keenly aware of how high the bar of execution needs to be.”
‘The Sea Snake’ / “Nine Voyages” Pivoted to animation
A series originally framed as “The Sea Snake” — focused on Corlys Velaryon (played by Steve Toussaint in “House of the Dragon”) — has reportedly shifted from live-action to animation. The project has also been referred to as “Nine Voyages.”
The story would follow Corlys’ legendary journeys, which span far beyond Westeros. Martin has publicly supported animation as a way to portray the scale of this world without the limitations of live-action budgets.
‘The Golden Empire’ Exploring Yi Ti Remains in Development
“The Golden Empire” is another animated “Game of Thrones” project in development. The series would explore Yi Ti, a wealthy empire in far eastern Essos inspired by Imperial China.
The setting would allow the franchise to move beyond Westeros into new political systems, major cities, and power struggles. While the project is still considered in development, updates have been limited.
‘Ten Thousand Ships’ Prequel Revived With New Pilot Talk
“Ten Thousand Ships” is a prequel concept set roughly 1,000 years before “Game of Thrones.” The story centers on Princess Nymeria and the exodus of the Rhoynar after defeat by the Valyrian Freehold, leading to settlement in Dorne.
The project appeared stalled at one point, but more recent reporting indicates it has been revived with discussion of a new pilot. No further production details have been confirmed.
“A Knight of Seven Kingdoms” premieres January 18, 2026, on HBO.
