Former American Idol Judge Opens Up About Painful Split: ‘A Really Tough Time’

Jennifer Lopez is opening up about one of the most difficult chapters of her personal life.

During a recent performance at her Las Vegas residency, the former “American Idol” judge spoke candidly about the emotional toll following her split from ex-husband Marc Anthony.

Lopez, who shares 18-year-old twins Max and Emme with Anthony, admitted that the period after their relationship ended was particularly challenging.

Lopez Opens Up About Her Divorce

Reflecting on that time while speaking to the audience, she joked about her past marriages before acknowledging how difficult the experience truly was.

“After my third divorce, that’s when I really started getting good at it,” Lopez quipped during the show, before quickly clarifying, “Seriously, that’s not funny. That’s not funny.”

The 56-year-old singer explained that she reached a breaking point after the breakup. At the time, she was raising two young children while navigating major personal and professional changes.

“It was actually a really tough time,” she told the crowd. “I was really about to give up on it all.”

Lopez said she sought advice from late self-help author Louise Hay during that difficult period.

The conversation ended up giving her a powerful perspective that she still carries today.

“She said to me, ‘Jennifer, you’re a dancer, right?’” Lopez recalled. “I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ And she said, ‘When you’re learning a dance, and you get the steps wrong, what do you do?’”

According to Lopez, her answer was simple.

“I said, ‘I just keep going until I get the steps right,’” she explained.

Hay then offered advice that stuck with the performer long after the conversation ended.

“She said, ‘That’s right, Jennifer. Always keep dancing.’”

Lopez told fans she now tries to live by that message and hopes others do the same when facing setbacks in life.

“And I wish the same for every last one of you,” she said. “That no matter what life throws at you, that you dance, and you dance, and you dance—again, and again, and again.”

Lopez Has Had Multiple Divorces

The singer’s reflections come after several public conversations about her relationships over the years.

Lopez and Anthony married in 2004 before finalizing their divorce in 2014.

More recently, Lopez also addressed her split from ex-husband Ben Affleck. During a September 2025 interview while promoting the film “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” she described the breakup as a turning point in her personal growth.

“Because it changed me,” Lopez said at the time. “It helped me grow in a way that I needed to grow.”

While Lopez has experienced both personal highs and heartbreak throughout her decades-long career, the star made it clear during her performance that she continues to move forward with resilience — one step, and one dance, at a time.
