Nicole Kidman Moving on: ‘Everything Happens For a Reason’

Divorce comes with a heartbreak that feels too personal, but for Nicole Kidman, moving forward with grace and gratitude is the only way. Kidman ended her 19-year marriage after filing for divorce from former “American Idol” judge and country music icon Keith Urban.

The Oscar-winning actress, 57, is โ€œsurrounded by the two things that matter the most to her,โ€ a source tells People: โ€œher family and her work.โ€

Now back home in Nashville after a recent trip to Europe, Kidman is keeping her spirits high. โ€œShe isn’t someone who dwells on regrets โ€” she believes everything happens for a reason,โ€ the insider said.

On September 29, TMZ reported Kidmanโ€™s separation from Urban, also 57, after 19 years of marriage. The next day, the Babygirl star filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences and listing the date of separation as the time of filing.

Kidman and Urban married in 2006 and share two daughters, Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. In her divorce filing, Kidman requested to be the primary residential parent.

A source tells People the actress is maintaining a positive outlook. โ€œShe has a great attitude and feels very grateful for her life,โ€ the insider said. โ€œShe has several work projects coming up and is looking forward to them.โ€

Those upcoming projects include TV adaptations of โ€œMargoโ€™s Got Money Troublesโ€ and โ€œScarpetta,โ€ a third season of โ€œBig Little Lies,โ€ and a long-awaited sequel to the 1988 classic โ€œPractical Magicโ€ alongside Sandra Bullock. Kidman announced on September 13 via Instagram that filming for โ€œPractical Magic 2โ€ had officially wrapped.

Kidman appeared to subtly reference her separation in a Harperโ€™s Bazaar interview published shortly after the divorce news broke.

โ€œThereโ€™s something to knowing that no matter how painful, or how difficult, or how devastating something is, there is a way through,โ€ she said when asked about the best part of growing older. โ€œYou are going to have to feel it, and itโ€™s going to feel insurmountable at times. Youโ€™re going to feel like youโ€™re broken, but if you move gently and slowly โ€” and it can take an enormous amount of time โ€” it does pass.โ€

A separate source told People that Kidman had been โ€œstressed because she knew the separation would eventually become public and she was dreading it,โ€ but said she has handled the situation calmly. โ€œNow that itโ€™s out, sheโ€™s focused on whatโ€™s ahead and her girls,โ€ the source added.

Supported by Family & Looking Ahead

According to another insider, Kidman โ€œhad been fighting to save the marriageโ€ even during their private separation in recent months. โ€œShe didnโ€™t want this,โ€ the source shared, noting that โ€œthe entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,โ€ especially her sister Antonia.

Nicole and Antonia were seen taking a walk together in Nashville on Oct. 1, marking her first public appearance since the news broke.

Despite the personal challenges, Kidman is finding strength in her family and career.
