Former “Big Brother” contestant Jessica Hughbanks Brokaw is mourning a devastating loss. The season 8 alum revealed through social media that her husband, Matt Brokaw, has died following a courageous battle with esophageal and gastric cancer, prompting an outpouring of love and condolences from fans, friends, and members of the “Big Brother” community.
Courageous Battle With Cancer
In a social media post, former “Big Brother” contestant Jessica Hughbanks Brokaw shared the sad news about her husband. Brokaw shared the obituary for her husband, Matthew Brokaw, with the caption, “Our hearts are broken but we know that he is in Heaven now with no more pain. 💔🙏”
According to the obituary, Matthew Brokaw died at the age of 50 years old on December 27, 2025. The heartwarming obituary stated that he died “after a courageous battle with Esophageal and Gastric cancer.”
The obituary states, “Matt was a devoted husband, proud father, and loyal friend.”
Matthew had a career in sports management, “where he was respected for his hard work and dedication.” For 25 years, he worked with the Wichita Thunder Hockey Team in Kansas.
The tribute stated his “great joy in life was being a dad, and he never missed a chance to support, encourage, and celebrate his children.”

After posting about her husband’s death, friends and family members shared their support and love on the Facebook post.
One person wrote, “Oh Jess, my heart is broken for you and the boys. I’m sending you big prayers and hugs for all the days ahead.♥️”
Another user added, “Oh my, I am so sorry. He is truly a kind and caring soul and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family,” while this person wrote, “I know this must be such a difficult time for you and I will be keeping your family in my daily thoughts!”

A ‘Big Brother’ Showmance
Jessica was a contestant on season 8 of “Big Brother.” During her time in the “Big Brother” house, she developed a showmance with fellow contestant Eric Stein.
While Jessica was eventually blindsided in the game and evicted from the house, her showmance with Stein stayed strong. They dated outside of the house for 10 years.
However, in 2012, she married Matthew. The couple has two children, Max and Cam, together.
