Hough celebrated the life and legacy of Van Der Beek, who competed on Season 28 of DWTS, when she shared the announcement of his passing on her Instagram Stories. She shared her thoughts in text on the screen. “James, you craeted (sic) a Legacy of love and light. Wrapping your beautiful family in love and protection,” she wrote.
Hough also shared a second Instagram Story, showing a photo of Van Der Beek lying in bed with his six children. It is a sweet moment. This time, Hough encouraged fans to donate to the GoFundMe page that was set up for James’s wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, and their children. “Please consider donating to James’ beautiful family,” Hough wrote. She ended her message with a red heart emoji.
The GoFundMe page was set up by one of the family’s friends. Of the $1.5 million goal, the fund has already raised $2.18 million. Fans know James bravely fought colorectal cancer for years before his death, and the information on the fund reveals that his health struggles depleted their funds.
“Throughout his illness, the family faced not only emotional challenges but also significant financial strain as they did everything possible to support James and provide for his care,” the fund reads.
It continues, “In the wake of this loss, Kimberly and the children are facing an uncertain future. The costs of James’s medical care and the extended fight against cancer have left the family out of funds. They are working hard to stay in their home and to ensure the children can continue their education and maintain some stability during this incredibly difficult time. The support of friends, family, and the wider community will make a world of difference as they navigate the road ahead.”
