Season 13 of Hallmark’s “When Calls the Heart” got off to a wild start with the premiere on January 4. A cliffhanger got fans buzzing, and after the episode aired, WCTH stars Erin Krakow and Kevin McGarry gave some insight into how things proceed.
The “When Calls the Heart” stars talked with TV Insider about the big fire cliffhanger. What’s coming next for Nathan, Elizabeth, and Hope Valley?
Kevin McGarry’s Nathan Wants to Help ‘as Many People as He Can’
According to McGarry, who plays Nathan Grant, episode 2 of “When the Heart Calls” season 13 picks up right where the premiere left off.
He noted that during the next episode, which airs on January 11, the community “really comes together to save Hope Valley and the neighboring towns from this.”
Given his work as a Mountie, Nathan has a duty to protect the town as a whole, and McGarry noted that’s his “top priority.”
However, the actor added that in addition to keeping the residents of Hope Valley safe, he believes Nathan is also especially focused on keeping both Elizabeth and his daughter, Allie, safe.
McGarry explained, “It must be hard on somebody when any responder has to go out here to put their life in danger for somebody else.”
He added, “But I think in that moment, particularly, he’s going to save his daughter and help as many people as he can.”
As “When Calls the Heart” viewers saw during the premiere, Allie (Jaeda Lily Miller) and Cooper (Elias Leacock) had headed to the newly christened Goldie National Park for a hike. When the fire breaks out, Nathan and others realize the kids are still out there.
WCTH Fans Are Eager to See What’s Ahead As Erin Krakow Notes ‘Renewed Hope’ for the Community
Krakow told TV Insider that the situation prompts “some intense feelings and fears, especially on the heels of so much joy.”
For Elizabeth, watching Nathan rush off to save people amid the fire surely prompts her to think back to the death of her husband, Jack Thornton, in season 5 of “When Calls the Heart.”
Krakow explains, she knows “The stakes are very high. It’s life or death, and knowing that there are kids in those woods…It’s dangerous, and even a windstorm back then was life or death.”
Despite the fear and danger that Nathan and others face with the fire, “When Calls the Heart” has promised lots of joy in season 13. Krakow chatted with People and explained, “We start season 13 with some very renewed hope.”
“When Calls the Heart” fans loved the season 13 premiere and can’t wait to see what lies ahead. Many took to X, formerly Twitter, to share their excitement.
“The show somehow felt fresh and new. Not just N and E, not just L and Edie, but the whole town felt more alive and yet they made it seem familiar too. I am all in for all of the town and all of the love,” one fan tweeted.
Another gushed, “I watched it twice … so GOOD, can’t wait till next Sunday.”

Very thankful WCTH is incorporating more of the actors in more of the scenes. This series is about the “whole” town.
