Ed Sheeran Has a Good Reason for Not Performing the ‘First Gig in Space’

Ed Sheeran may be willing to play his music — even secret shows — here on Earth, but that’s as far as he’s willing to go. That’s right, this singer has limits to where he’ll travel to perform his hits and one place that’s just too far (and too scary) happens to be space. Although that might seem like a far-out idea, it turns out that it could have been a very real possibility. While talking to Scott Mills on BBC Radio 2, the “Azizam” singer revealed that he was offered — and turned down — an opportunity to play the “first gig in space.”

“I was offered to go to space a while ago, you know? And it terrifies me,” Sheeran readily admitted. He also opened up about talking to someone “about doing a gig there, doing a first gig in space.” He added, “I’m sure lots of people got that email, but, yeah, it terrifies me.”

Granted, that doesn’t mean he never wants to go to space. He just wants to do so under different circumstances. He explained. “I want to go to space when it’s like flying to France and 40,000 people have done it, and you can just book it online.”

He later added, “I don’t want to be a guinea pig for that, because it still is dangerous.”

Of course, that’s not the only reason the singer won’t be hopping on a rocket ship any time soon.

Sheeran Won’t Go to Space Because of His Kids

When it comes to doing a show in space, Sheeran has two big reasons not to go and those reasons happen to be two little people. The star, who shares daughters, five-year-old Lyra Antarctica and three-year-old Jupiter, with wife Cherry Seaborn, told BBC Radio 2, “Mate, I ain’t doing it, I’ve got kids.”

“I’m not going to risk that for a Guinness World Record something or other,” Sheeran explained adamantly. “I’m not going to risk my kids not having a dad.”

Going to space might be an incredible out of this world experience, however, Sheeran would rather keep his feet on the ground while exploring different locations here on Earth.

“There’s places on this planet that I haven’t been to,” Sheeran noted. Offering an example, he added, “I’ve never been to Greenland. I would love to go to Greenland.”

He also explained, “There’s places on this planet I would far rather go to than space.”
