Elton John ‘Battling On’ After Vision Loss, Husband David Furnish Shares Health Update

Elton John is continuing to push forward after a difficult health battle that significantly impacted his vision.

According to his husband, David Furnish, the legendary musician has been focusing on family life while managing the lingering effects of a severe eye infection.

Speaking to Variety, Furnish shared that the 78-year-old performer is doing well despite the challenges.

Furnish Gives an Update on His Husband

“He’s great. He’s battling on. He’s keeping busy and moving forward,” Furnish said. “He’s happy being at home as a family with our sons.”

The couple share two children together, Zachary, 15, and Elijah, 13.

Furnish explained that spending more time at home with their family has become a priority, especially after John stepped away from touring.

“That’s why he came off the road,” Furnish added. “We really love parenting, we love our family, and we love being together, and that’s everything for us.”

John’s health struggles began in July 2024 when he developed a serious eye infection.

The condition ultimately left him blind in his right eye and with limited vision in his left, drastically affecting his daily life.

John Has Previously Opened Up

The singer previously opened up to Variety in November 2025 about the devastating impact of the condition, explaining that it has made many normal activities impossible.

“It’s been devastating,” John said in an earlier interview. “Because I lost my right eye and my left eye’s not so good, the last 15 months have been challenging for me because I haven’t been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything.”

Despite the difficulties, the music icon has remained hopeful that medical advancements could eventually improve his eyesight.

“I’ve had the most incredible life, and there is hope,” he said. “I’ve just gotta be patient that someday science will help me with this one.”

John also reflected on the importance of perseverance during tough times.

“You mustn’t give up hope, you must be stoic, you must be strong and you must always try and batter the door down to try and improve things,” he said.

The singer first publicly revealed his eye condition in September 2024 through a message shared on Instagram. In the post, he explained that he had been quietly recovering at home while doctors monitored his progress.

“Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye,” John wrote at the time. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.”

While the recovery has been gradual, John said he remained grateful for the support system around him.

“I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me,” he shared.

Although his touring days may be behind him, the legendary performer continues to remain optimistic about the future — and grateful for the life and career he has built.
