Robert Redford’s Loving Family Releases a Heartfelt Statement After His Passing

Robert Redford, the Hollywood icon whose career spanned over six decades, has passed away at the age of 89. The New York Times first reported the news on September 16, 2025.

“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah, the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” his publicist Cindi Berger said in a statement. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”

According to Berger, Redford died in his sleep.

A Storied Career on Screen & Behind the Camera

Redford became one of the most recognizable faces of 20th-century cinema, starring in classics like “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969), “The Sting” (1973), “All the President’s Men” (1976), and “Out of Africa” (1985).

In addition to his work as an actor, Redford won the Academy Award for directing “Ordinary People” (1980) and earned another directing nomination for “Quiz Show” (1994). He also received an honorary Oscar in 2002.

“I’ve spent most of my life just focused on the road ahead, not looking back,” he said in his acceptance speech for the honorary award. “But now tonight, I’m seeing in the rearview mirror that there is something I’ve not thought about much, called history.”

Tributes From Fans & Hollywood Figures

Following news of his death, tributes poured in from fans and fellow stars.

“Thinking about people who led very full and creative lives—Robert Redford’s name is very near the top of that list!” one fan wrote on X. Another added, “RIP Robert Redford—thank you for the rich body of cinematic excellence you left your fans with!”

One tribute highlighted his role in “The Natural”: “RIP Robert Redford. You’ll always be Roy Hobbs, the greatest left-handed batter ever.”

Redford’s Later Years & Retirement Reflections

In August 2018, Redford told Entertainment Weekly (as reported by People) that he planned to retire after completing “The Old Man & the Gun,” where he starred alongside Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, Tika Sumpter, and Tom Waits.

“Never say never, but I pretty well concluded that this would be it for me in terms of acting, and I’ll move toward retirement after this ’cause I’ve been doing it since I was 21,” he said.

A month later, however, Redford expressed regret for announcing his retirement, telling People magazine he was unsure of what the future held. “I think it was a mistake to say that I was retiring because you never know,” he admitted.
