In case you were unaware, Love Island mania has officially kicked off in the United States with Love Island USA Season 8 premiering on Peacock on June 2. That means over the course of several weeks, millions of fans will be tuning into every moment of the reality TV dating/competition series, formulating their opinions about every OG Islander, Bombshell, and Casa Amor threat that walks into the Villa.
As such is the case, these opinions will span across the social media space and podcast arenas, so the contestants and their loved ones have to develop particularly tough skin to cope with commentary from people who don’t really know them. (Yes, we may fall in that number to a degree, but we have a job to do.)
With that being said, with only one day of Season 8 behind us, the mother of one contestant is already clapping back at criticisms her son is receiving based on the “disappointing” and perhaps not fully factual remarks of his former employee.
Mayor J. William Reynolds Criticizes Sean Reifel for “Quitting”
In the short few days leading up to the Love Island USA Season 8 Premiere, Sean Reifel was announced to be a part of the cast. As a part of the announcement, he shared that he was a police officer. Then, before the season premiere episode even hit Peacock, the mayor of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, J. William Reynolds, came out and criticized Reifel for quitting the police department of the town to go on this season of Love Island USA. According to a local ABC News affiliate, Reynolds stated:
“Our police department spent a lot of time training and we paid thousands of taxpayer dollars to send him to the police academy. We are disappointed he left as we now have another vacancy in our department that is impossible to fill until next year. I never thought I’d see the day in America where reality show participation wins out over being a police officer.”
Sean Reifel’s Mom: “Important to Share All the Facts”
“This is Sean’s mom and the statements made by these officials are disappointing and they missed a huge opportunity to make a positive impact. They did not spend taxpayer dollars to send him to a full academy. He came with four years of experience from Northern California where he was a sheriff deputy. Contra Costa County Sheriff Dept paid for him to attend a full academy. Yes they spent some but they are making statements that do not tell the whole story. Also I think it’s interesting that they say he resigned because he was told to put in for leave before going to on the show. And then after arriving in Fiji his leave was denied.
Just for clarification’s sake, in that ABC News story, the mayor is alleging that Reifel retired. However, Reifel’s mom is claiming her son put in a request for leave, and his request was denied while in Fiji, the location of the Love Island USA set.
