98 Degrees heartthrob Nick Lachey has broken his silence on the pressures of boy band stardom.
Lachey claims that when the band was at its peak, there was no stopping to rest, take a moment for themselves, or take a moment for themselves. The demanding schedule kept him and his bandmates constantly on the road, with little time to step away from the spotlight.
Nick Lachey Reveals All in New Documentary
Nick Lachey is telling his story as part of a new docuseries to air on Investigation Discovery. The series is produced by *NSYNC’s Joey Fatone, called “Boy Band Confidential.”
According to Us Weekly, Lachey said that today’s artists, such as Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes, are now able to pull back from touring or appearances if they are experiencing personal stressors. He claimed that back in the late 1990s, that wasn’t an option.
Getty“You see [Justin] Bieber cancel a tour. You’ll see Shawn Mendes cancel a tour because [their] mental health needs to come first,” Lachey stated. “That was not an option when we were out there.”
“You went out there, and you did the show. Then you came back after the show, and you broke down and you cried, and you kicked a hole in the wall,” the recording artist continued.
He concluded, “Or you did whatever you had to do. But you didn’t bow out. You work so hard to get there, you can’t let your foot off the gas.”
The band balanced these stressors by enjoying the adoration of millions of fans. This resulted in huge album sales and legions of admirers who continue to follow the band to this day. Being part of one of the biggest boy bands of the decade helped launch their careers and opened the door to a life they had once only dreamed about.
At the band’s peak, 98 Degrees, which included members Drew Lachey, Jeff Timmons, and Justin Jeffre, was one of the top bands in the music industry. The band briefly split and later, reunited in 2012.
Nick Lachey is One of Several of The Most Popular Boy Band Members of the ’90s Involved in the Project
In the late 1990s, 98 Degrees solidified their spot as one of the premier pop-R&B boy bands. Although they were grouped into the same type of music as *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, and other wildly popular bands of the decade, theirs was a more vocal-driven sound and less reliant on elaborate choreography or production spectacle.
Lachey’s participation in the Investigation Discovery docuseries gives yet another perspective into the other side of pop superstardom.
According to a , “Boy Band Confidential” kicks off an all-new season of the series “Hollywood Demons.” The special “goes deep inside the boy band boom of the late 1990s and early aughts, revealing how the industry transformed young performers.”
Along with Lachey and Joey Fatone, other participants include *NSYNC member Lance Bass, AJ McLean of Backstreet Boys, Wanya Morris and Shawn Stockman of Boyz II Men, Ashley Parker Angel of O-Town, Brad Fischetti of LFO, and others.
Fatone said in a press release, “Being in a boy band was one of the greatest experiences of my life. But it also came with challenges we didn’t always understand at the time. This project gave all of us a chance to reflect, to be honest, and to share what really happened behind the spotlight.”
“Boy Band Confidential” airs beginning Monday, April 20 at 9 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery. It will also be available to stream on HBO Max.
