Fran Drescher Digs Into Behind-the-Scenes of Her Sitcom Experience

When it comes to 90s sitcoms, “The Nanny,” starring Fran Drescher, is among the most beloved. This is so much the case that there have been talks of a reboot for quite some time. However, Drescher is opening up about why she may not do another sitcom after being part of multiple, including the short-lived “Indebted,” and how working on that show differed from “The Nanny.”

Regarding “The Nanny,” it ran on CBS from 1993 until Jun 1993. In additon to Drescher, the series features Charles Shaughnessy, Lauren Lane, Daniel Davis, Benjamin Salisbury, Madeline Zima, Nicholle Tom, and Renée Taylor.

Drescher recently appeared on actor Ted Danson’s “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast. During the episode, she discussed her experiences filming shows like “The Nanny” and “Indebted” and why she wouldn’t do another sitcom.

The former Screen Actors Guild president said, “I don’t see myself doing another sitcom. You know, it’s just the idea of going into the soundstage every day.” After that, the beloved actress discussed the last sitcom she did, which, per IMDb, was 2020’s “Indebted.”

Drescher stated, “The last one that I did wasn’t my show. I played the mom in it, and I really didn’t — I loved the people, but I didn’t enjoy the experience that much because we were shooting it over the winter months.

It was pretty dark when I entered the stage, and it was dark when I left it. And I thought, ‘I just lost the whole day. Was this worth it? Is this how I would have wanted to spend the day if it turned out to be the last day of my life?’ And it wasn’t.”

From there, Drescher discussed the situation she had with “The Nanny,” where she was one of the creators. She explained, “Now, maybe when I’m writing and executive producing, directing — all of those hats that I wore in my own shows — maybe it would be more stimulating and gratifying.”

She Previously Discussed A Reboot

Nowadays, many of the most popular shows from the 90s are coming back with reboots and reimaginings. Drescher spoke to TV Insider in 2023 about a potential reboot and whether she had decided on what a new version of “The Nanny” would be.

According to her, “It’s funny because in November we’ll be celebrating our 30th anniversary. It will be 30 years since The Nanny started, as crazy as that sounds. So we are talking to the president of Sony, our parent company, about what we can do that is special in celebration. That’s not a reboot, but you never know. It could be a backdoor pilot.

There are a lot of different ways The Nanny could go, whether it’s the same concept with a whole new cast set in the 2020s. Whether it’s the original cast that includes the twins, and of course, all the cast. Or maybe a spinoff with one of the characters.”

Drescher added, “I think that one of the strongest ways it goes would be with myself and Charles Shaughnessy as Fran and Mr. Sheffield. Then it would be about figuring out who is Fran in the 2020s. What is she about?”
