Tim McGraw paid tribute to his late father, Tug McGraw, on his heavenly birthday on Saturday, August 30. The touching moment occurred when he performed a concert at the baseball stadium featured in the 1989 film, “Field of Dreams.”
Tim McGraw Has a Special Moment
It was McGraw’s first-ever concert at this location, and it was incredibly special for the musician. He shared clips from the concert on Instagram, giving a glimpse into his performance. “Would’ve been my dad’s 81st birthday. I’m gonna be looking at the cornfield out there and seeing if Tug and Hank walk out and say hello tonight,” McGraw said in the clip of his father and uncle.
There is also a point where McGraw and the crowd sang “Happy Birthday” to his late father, Frank Edwin “Tug” McGraw Jr., who passed away on January 5, 2004. He was 59.

In the caption, McGraw shared his thoughts. “Iowa! You guys brought it last night! First ever concert @thefieldofdreamsmoviesite and on Tug’s birthday too! Hard to top that!!!” he wrote.
Fans reacted to the post with messages of love and condolences. “Love this! Sad couldn’t be there, know Tug and Hank were looking down and smiling!,” a fan wrote. “Happy Heavenly Birthday to Tug! I’m sure the concert was amazing as yours always are, Tim!” another person shared.
Fans who attended the show also raved about it. “This was amazing!!” a comment reads. “So happy to have been there for such a special event! We had a great time,” another person shared.
Tim McGraw’s Relationship With His Father
McGraw did not meet his father until he was an adult and only discovered his existence when he was 11. Instead, he grew up with his mother, Elizabeth Ann D’Agostino, in Louisiana. In an interview with Esquire in August 2021, he reflected on his relationship with his father.
In response to the question of how people always ask him about how he could have a relationship with his father, he said: “’How could you have a relationship with your father? You were growing up in nothing. He was a millionaire baseball player. He knew you were there, and he didn’t do anything.’ But when I found out Tug McGraw was my dad, it gave me something in my little town in Louisiana, something that I would have never reached for. How could I ever be angry?”
Also in the interview, McGraw discussed money. “Money doesn’t solve all the problems, but I’d rather have problems than not have money. As bad as that sounds,” he said.
