’80s Punk Rock Legend Passes Away at 60: Tributes Pour In

The music world is remembering Ray Mayhew with love and gratitude. The drummer who drove the sound of British new wave band Sigue Sigue Sputnik has died at age 60, according to The Mirror. Mayhew was a founding member of Sigue Sigue Sputnik, the genre-defying band created in 1982 by former Generation X bassist Tony James with input from The Clash’s Mick Jones.

Mayhew’s Cause Of Death

While no cause of death has been reported, news of his passing has sparked an outpouring of tributes from fans, peers, and former bandmates who hailed him as both a musical force and a cherished friend.

A Defining Force in Sigue Sigue Sputnik

Known for their sky-high mohawks, flamboyant fashion, and provocative image, the group was as visually daring as it was musically bold.

Before releasing a single, the band had already sparked a bidding war, eventually signing with EMI in a deal rumored to be worth £4 million.

Their debut single, “Love Missile F1-11,” became an international hit in 1986, climbing to number three on the UK charts and earning a place in pop culture with its feature in the opening sequence of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

While their look drew headlines, it was Mayhew’s drumming that anchored the chaos, giving structure to their punk-meets-electronic sound.

Heartfelt Tributes From Bandmates & Fans

Mayhew’s former bandmates were among the first to honor him publicly. Singer Martin Degville, 64, shared his heartbreak on Facebook, calling him his “best friend.”

“It is with great sadness that I have been informed today that my best friend and drummer of Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Ray Mayhew, has passed away,” Degville wrote. “May God bless you – you will forever be in my thoughts, and also in the hearts of the fans who love you. You were a force, a light that shone so brightly. Rest in peace, mate. Love you always.”

Guitarist Neal X, 64, also shared his grief, posting a photo of Mayhew in his prime. “Sad to hear the news that former Sigue Sigue Sputnik drummer Ray Mayhew died earlier today,” he wrote. “We shared some magic moments together through the ’80s. Rest in peace old friend! 💔”

Fans echoed the sentiments, with one writing, “Tragic news… he will forever be in the hearts of Sputnik fans.” Another added, “Though he was the least in the limelight in the band, it’s a noticeable light that’s gone out.”

Mayhew’s Lasting Legacy

Mayhew left Sigue Sigue Sputnik in 1989 and went on to form his own project, Mayhem Deranged. Still, his name remains forever tied to the explosive rise of the band that defined part of the ’80s punk and new wave scene.

Fans remembered him as the drummer who, in one commenter’s words, “kept that controlled mayhem together.”

Though he may have been the quietest presence in a band built on spectacle, Mayhew’s steady rhythm was its heartbeat. His influence lives on in the music he helped create and the memories of those who saw him perform
