Daytime TV Enters New Era With Microsoap ‘The Golden Pear Affair’

Soap opera fans have something new to look forward to, and it’s unlike anything currently on daytime TV.

Procter & Gamble, the consumer-products giant that helped produce dramas like “The Guiding Light,” “As the World Turns,” and “Beyond the Gates,” is giving daytime drama a fresh take with “microsoaps.”

According to a report by Variety, the company is leaning into the digital world with the release of “The Golden Pear Affair.”

The 50-episode microsoap aims to reach a more digitally savvy audience, adding an intriguing twist to the traditional soap formula.

‘The Golden Pear Affair’: What We Know So Far

The outlet revealed that “The Golden Pear Affair” stars Nick Ritacco and Alyona Real. It is slated to premiere on social media in January 2026.

Viewers can expect bite-sized episodes, each running between one and two and a half minutes.

The short-form episodes “are serialized dramas. They are soapy, and there are going to be some elements that are a little out there,” Anna Saalfeld, head of P&G Studios, told the outlet. “It’s definitely social-first. It is optimized for viewing on your screen. It is very snackable. There are key differentiators.”

Meanwhile, Geneva Wasserman, global executive vice president of entertainment IP strategy and investment at Dentsu, teased what’s ahead for viewers.

“It’s got romance. It’s certainly got adventure. And it’s a lot of fun,” she told the outlet. “We want you to have a little smile and a laugh, but also a shock, and ask ‘What’s going to happen next?'”

Soap fans are already looking forward to the new series, given its modern-day format.

One soap enthusiast wrote, “That’s great for soaps. Gorgeous cast, beautiful scenery.”

Another commented, “I’ll certainly give it a try. Hopefully, they will cast some of the great soap veterans.”

Someone added, “Anything that brings back new content in soap format and promotes the overall genre, I am all for!”

Meanwhile, others believe it would be great to revive classic soaps in a new format.

A fan suggests, “I love the news! Would it not be cool to possibly see ‘Guiding Light’ and ‘As the World Turns’ have a revisit in this form?”

Another chimed in, “This is great, and I will support, but please, P&G, bring back ‘ATWT’ and ‘GL.’I would love to rewatch old episodes from the 70s, 80s, until the end.”
