A video has emerged online showing a young Gordon Ramsay being unrecognizably quiet back in 1989.
In the late 1980s, Ramsay was working under the tutelage of another world famous British chef, Marco Pierre White, at Harveys restaurant in Wandsworth, London. White is also present in the video.
Ramsay, now 59, would have been either 22 or 23 at the time of the clip, depending on the month. His demeanor was a far cry from the loud, imposing, authoritative, and often foul-mouthed world-class chef we know him as today.
Gordon Ramsay Is Shown Preparing Lobster Ravioli
In the 117-second video, shared on the Moist Instagram account, which has 6 million followers, Ramsay can be seen helping Marco Pierre White to prepare freshly-made lobster ravioli.
He barely says a word during the entire clip. He simply carefully observes, listens to, and carries out the instructions delivered to him by White, now 64, who would have been 27 or 28 at the time.
The video’s caption reads, “In 1989, before global fame, Gordon Ramsay was a young chef refining his craft in top London kitchens.”
It continues, “Footage from that era shows him carefully preparing dishes like lobster ravioli, long before the fiery TV persona the world would come to know.”
The caption concludes, “It’s a reminder that behind the intensity and headlines was years of disciplined training, classical technique, and relentless pursuit of perfection.”
That couldn’t be more true. While Ramsay is undeniably a divisive personality, his position as a highly-respected and globally-known chef through hard work is undoubtedly one he has earned.
The video’s comments are full of praise and respect for Ramsay, with one user writing, “This actually shows how admirable he is in that he had to earn his way up. And was not arrogant when he was a learner.”
Someone else commented, “He’s learning. That’s why he’s quiet.”
Another viewer of the video said, “That is what you call Marco being your boss.”
It was part of a culinary education that led to Ramsay being the chef and man he is today — and there’s absolutely no denying his monumental success.
Ramsay Is Currently the Subject of a Netflix Documentary Series
GettySuch is the level of Gordon Ramsay’s success, he’s currently the subject of his own Netflix documentary.
“Being Gordon Ramsay” is a six-part documentary series that released globally on February 18 this year.
The official GB Netflix website describes it as follows: “Follow celeb chef Gordon Ramsay behind the scenes as he juggles family life, global empire and his biggest launch yet in this all-you-can-eat documentary.”
It currently has a 56% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Rest assured, the more familiar louder Gordon Ramsay the world come to love (or otherwise) is the one on show in the documentary. Give it a watch!
