Zach Braff Talks ‘Heartwarming’ Return of ‘Scrubs’: ‘It’s Like a Hug’

“Scrubs” star Zach Braff sat down with the hosts of “The View” to share his feelings about the series return after almost two decades off the air.

The actor and director called the show’s ABC revival “heartwarming.” He added that the comedy is “like a hug” for viewers.

In a clip posted to “The View” Instagram page, Braff explained why this particular series resonates so deeply with audiences. He said its humor and heart offer a sense of comfort to fans of network television comedies.

Why Does Zach Braff Think This is The Right Time For a ‘Scrubs’ Revival?

Zach Braff told “The View” Hot Topics Table panelists Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, and guest co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck that reuniting with the original cast for this revival felt right at this moment in time.

The reboot series stars Braff (J.D.), Sarah Chalke (Elliot), and Donald Faison (Turk), along with John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox), Judy Reyes (Carla), former SNL star Vanessa Bayer, Joel Kim Booster, Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, and Layla Mohammadi.

“There’s so much going on in the world, and the show is very heartwarming,” Braff explained. “It’s funny and it’s like a hug.”

He continued, “Bill Lawrence, who created the show, he also created “Ted Lasso.” That show during lockdown, it felt like the whole world needed a nice hug.”

“This show is like that. It’s funny, it’s got a lot of heart. And I think its a great time for the world to have a show like this,” the actor concluded.

How Many Years Has It Been Since ‘Scrubs’ Aired on TV?

It has been 16 years since “Scrubs” aired on network television. The series began on NBC but moved to ABC during its last season. It currently airs on ABC.

Zach Braff said that the series has changed with the times. “A lot of things” that they said and did have changed over 20 years after the series aired its first episode in 2001.

Braff added, “John McGinley’s character would berate the interns. You’re not allowed to berate the interns anymore.”

“We introduced this character, played by the brilliant Vanessa Bayer, who plays an HR (human resources) woman. As they have in real hospitals, they have wellness programs, all these things put in place. So we still have some of our edgy humor, but when someone steps over the line, Vanessa Bayer puts them in their place,” the actor concluded.

As the revival moves forward, longtime fans of the series are eager to see the show’s familiar brand of humor revisited, just when Braff claims viewers need it most.

“Scrubs” airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. New episodes air the next day on Hulu.
