Carrie Underwood threw it way back to the 1990s with a look straight from an iconic film hit, and her fans are obsessed.
The singer and former “American Idol” winner wore the ensemble to celebrate ’90s night. It was almost identical to the clothing a beloved character and “Friends” star wore in her 1997 hit film.
Carrie Underwood Channeled Lisa Kudrow’s ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion’ character
Lisa Kudrow starred as Michele Weinberger in the 1997 classic comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.” Kudrow starred alongside Mira Sorvino, who played Romy White.
In the film’s climactic ending, Michele and Romy wore their own creations to their high school reunion. While Sorvino’s character wore a silver mini-dress, Kudrow stunned in a hot pink number with a faux fur bottom.
Underwood recreated the look for “American Idol’s” tribute to the decade’s music. She shared a photo on Instagram with a caption, “Taking it back to the 90s for tonight’s look, inspired by ‘Michele’ from Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion!”
The film’s costume designer, Mona May, discussed the now-iconic costumes and their underlying meaning in a 2018 discussion with Interview Magazine. “You have the Barbie doll Lisa [Kudrow], who’s sexy, fun, and a little bit ditzy, but smart underneath. I think the dresses reflect the play of the characters really well. It was fun to see how well it worked on set.”

The comedy starred Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino as best friends who invent a fake success story to impress their classmates during their ten year high school reunion. The movie also starred Janeane Garofalo, Alan Cumming, Elaine Hendrix, Camryn Manheim, and Justin Theroux.
During ’90s night, “American Idol” cut down the contestant pool by three more. This left 11 contestants to move forward in the competition: Jesse Findling, Jake Thistle, and Julián Kalel were eliminated. The show airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+. The show airs the next day on Hulu.
