‘American Idol’ Alum Opens Up About Overnight Fame as a Teen in Honest Interview

“American Idol” winner Jordin Sparks kicked off her new podcast, “What’s Your Spark?” with a very fitting first guest: fellow Idol alum David Archuleta.

Archuleta, who captured hearts as the 17 year old runner-up in season 7, became known for his boyish charm and powerhouse vocals. Though he did not take home the title, his music career thrived with hits like “Crush.” Now, at 34, Archuleta opened up to Sparks about being thrust into fame as a teenager, and the pressure he felt to live up to fans’ expectations while still trying to figure out who he was.

As Jordin Sparks’ first guest on her “What’s Your Spark?” podcast, it was only fitting that David Archuleta and Sparks reflect on their “American Idol” experiences. Early on in the interview, Archuleta admitted how challenging it was for him to go from a reserved and home-schooled 17-year-old to having millions of people rooting for him to win the show.

For a teen who was still figuring out who he was, it was a total whirlwind.

“I was still trying to be liked, and I didn’t know who I needed to be to be liked, but it’s like I’d already been kind of like cast in the show as this likable next door neighbor kind of a teenager,” he told Sparks.

Archuleta continued, “Okay, what am I doing that’s likable? I didn’t really know … I’m used to being behind-the-scenes, and in the background, and kind of invisible even, because I felt more comfortable that way. And, now I can’t.”

The singer added that there was a lot of pressure not to let his fans down. “A lot of people…they’re rooting for me and counting on me to win. You feel the pressure where it’s like, you don’t want to let people down, especially as a people pleaser.”

In fact, Archuleta told Sparks that he is still processing how his life changed overnight thanks to Idol. “I’m still processing things from years ago. I’m like, I did that. Yeah, I did that. That’s crazy,” he said.

Archuleta Is Happy to Be in His New Era

Appearing as a guest on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Oct. 20, Archuleta opened up about entering a new chapter in his life following the release of his summer EP, “Earthly Delights.” For him, it was the perfect opportunity to show fans a different side, a more confident, daring side that he hoped his fans would embrace.

“I’m trying to get into my flirtier, sexy era,” he told Clarkson. “You know I grew up so reserved and scared to show any kind of flirtiness that finally, in my 30s I get to just be sexy and it feels so fun,” he added.

Archuleta is also set to release his memoir, “Devout,” in February 2026, where he goes deeper into the whirlwind of sudden fame brought to him by “American Idol.” The book will also explore his personal journey toward self-acceptance and his decision to step away from the Mormon church and live his authentic life.
