More than 40 years after Ralphie Parker nearly shot his eye out, “A Christmas Story” remains one of the most beloved holiday movies of all time. Released in 1983, the film did not become an instant hit, but it slowly grew into a cultural staple thanks to annual 24-hour marathons on TBS and TNT every Christmas Day.
Here’s a look at the “A Christmas Story” cast then and now.
Peter Billingsley Played Ralphie — and Never Really Left the Movie Business
Peter Billingsley was just 11 years old when he played Ralphie, the imaginative kid convinced a BB gun would make his Christmas perfect. While the role followed him for years, Billingsley didn’t disappear after the movie.
He kept acting for a while, popping up on shows like “Who’s the Boss?” and “The Wonder Years,” before moving behind the camera. As an adult, he found his footing as a producer and director, working with his best friend, Vince Vaughn, on projects like “The Break-Up,” “Couples Retreat,” and “Four Christmases.” Billingsley has also directed Vaughn in “Couples Retreat” and “Term Life.”
“It’s borderline sacred for a lot of people,” he told People ahead of the release of the sequel, acknowledging just how deeply the movie still means to fans.

Melinda Dillon played Mrs. Parker, the calm center of a very loud household. Long before “A Christmas Story,” Dillon was already an acclaimed actress, but her role as Ralphie’s mom made her unforgettable to holiday viewers.
She continued acting in films like “Harry and the Hendersons” and “Magnolia” before retiring in the late 2000s.
Dillon died in January 2023 at age 83.

Darren McGavin’s turn as Mr. Parker — the grumpy dad who secretly melts at Christmas — became one of the most beloved parts of the movie. His reactions to the furnace, the leg lamp, and Christmas dinner are still quoted decades later.
By the time he joined the cast, McGavin was already a seasoned actor. He kept working steadily after “A Christmas Story,” popping up on shows like “Murphy Brown” and memorably playing Adam Sandler’s dad in “Billy Madison.”
Although McGavin died in 2006, the 2022 sequel honored both the character and the actor, reminding fans of the heart he brought to the film.

Ian Petrella was just 8 years old when he played Ralphie’s little brother Randy, usually bundled up and barely able to move or talk. After a handful of TV roles, he walked away from acting and spent years off the Hollywood radar.
Eventually, Petrella found his way back to creative work in a different form, focusing on animation and puppetry and even studying abroad. Years later, he reconnected with his past when he reunited with the cast for “A Christmas Story Christmas.”
Zack Ward Still Gets Recognized as Scut Farkus
Zack Ward’s Scut Farkus remains one of the most recognizable bullies in movie history. After the film, Ward continued acting, appearing on “NCIS” and “American Horror Story.”
Ward later shared that he originally auditioned for a minor role before being reassigned on set. “So Scut Farkus became the bully,” he told People, a casting switch that helped create one of the movie’s most memorable characters.
GettyJean Shepherd Was More Than Just the Narrator
The voice guiding the movie is Jean Shepherd’s, whose stories inspired “A Christmas Story” in the first place: a radio host and writer, Shepherd based much of the film on his own childhood.
He continued writing and broadcasting until he died in 1999.
