DWTS Execs Blame Low Ratings On The Talent – REPORT

It is no secret that “Dancing With the Stars” fans do not care for host Tyra Banks, who took over hosting duties in season 29 after the show parted ways with Tom Bergeron and Erin Andrews. A new report now says the network executives are blaming the show’s low ratings on the season 30 talent pool and not Banks. Here is what the insider said and how far the “Dancing With the Stars” ratings have dipped since Bergeron and Andrews were fired.

An Insider Said The Executives Are ‘Scared’ To Address Ratings with Tyra Banks

According to The Sun, an insider said that “Dancing With the Stars” producers are “too scared” to blame Banks and the “fellow show boss,” i.e. Andrew Llinares, the executive producer who started with the show in season 26. The source said that executives are blaming “talent and not Tyra” for the low ratings and that they think this year’s contestants do not appeal to viewers the same way that past seasons have. The source also said that producers choose not to engage in talks about the ratings at this point.

“The network executives do not engage on this at all, certainly at production level,” said the source. “There is a sense that they do not want to make any comments, because they were the ones to bring in Tyra. And no one wants to lose face saying out loud there are problems. It doesn’t reflect well on their decision. So far the only discussion point about the struggles has been that it is the talent pool this year, which has not appealed to audiences – and nothing to do with Tyra.”

The source told The Sun that for now, everyone is focusing on “making the contestants have their best experiences and not worrying about the numbers,” plus they all “love their jobs,” so no one wants to rock the boat.

“No one is speaking up about all the dramas on a production level, because they love their jobs and the show. They are all doing the best they can, but hope that all the issues will get reviewed at some point,” said the insider.

How Bad Are The ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Ratings?

A note — broadcast TV ratings have been steadily falling for years due to the increase in viewership choices and rise in streaming platforms, plus the ability to watch something on delayed viewing via streaming services or DVR. So, ratings falling as a show airs is nothing new. It is extremely rare for a show to maintain the same ratings year after year. If you look at other reality shows like “American Idol,” “Survivor” and “Big Brother,” none of them get the ratings they once did, and “Dancing With the Stars” is the same way.

For Tom Bergeron’s final four fall seasons on the show, the ratings fell steadily year over year, dropping from an average of 10.52 million viewers per episode to 6.74 million viewers per episode from season 23 to season 28.

Here are the season averages from the past six fall seasons (via Showbuzz Daily and TV By the Numbers)

  • Season 23, which aired in the fall of 2016, averaged 10.52 million viewers per episode.
  • Season 25, which aired in the fall of 2017, averaged 9.35 million viewers per episode.
  • Season 27, which aired in the fall of 2018, averaged 7.12 million viewers per episode.
  • Season 28, which aired in the fall of 2019, averaged 6.74 million viewers per episode.
  • Season 29, which aired in the fall of 2020, averaged 6.19 million viewers per episode.
  • Season 30, which is airing in the fall of 2021, is averaging 4.82 million viewers per episode.

The drop from Bergeron’s penultimate season to his final one was by 0.38 million viewers on average. The drop between his final season and Tyra Banks’ first season as host was by 0.55. That is not that big of a difference, especially when you look back and see that there was a drop of over 2 million viewers between seasons 25 and 27.

However, the concerning number for “Dancing With the Stars” right now is from season 29 to season 30. The ratings have fallen by an average of 1.37 million viewers. If the pattern had held between seasons 27, 28, 29 and 30, the season 30 average would be more in line with 5.73 million viewers per episode, not 4.82 million viewers per episode.

Maybe the ratings drop is because of the new host or maybe the executives are right in saying it wasn’t a great talent pool this year — or maybe it’s just the nature of broadcast TV ratings steadily falling nowadays. There’s no way to know for sure. But the ratings are not great. It will be interesting to see what the ratings are for season 31, if the show gets renewed.

“Dancing With the Stars” airs Mondays at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific times on ABC.

  1. Tyra needs to be the focal point of whatever she’s doing. Not a diss, it’s just the way it is. Not everyone can host. Not only must you allow others to be the focus but you have to actively cultivate that and that just isn’t her bag. The show was better when it was Tom and Erin.

    • That’s asinine statement. They made a mistake hiring her. They’re probably too apprehensive to address it as she could walk then they’d have no host. Whatever it is I HIGHLY DOUBT its fear of confronting a black woman….

  2. If it were Erin and Tom hosting, I’d be watching the full episodes, and re watching them. Not the talents fault, its the host.

  3. I love DWTS and I think this year’s crop of dancers is fine. But I will not watch Tyra Banks. She is condescending and down right cruel on occasion. Get rid of her and I’ll be back.

  4. I think the fact that so many Pros are considering leaving are the statements you need to pay attention to, Tyra has inserted herself far above host and she is not good at being a host! Executive Producer? Does that give her the runway entrance BS every week when the show is not about her? Does that allow her to talk over the contestants and judges…using valuable time to chatter while the show gets hurredly ended each week? IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER….Tyra needs to go! I now DVR every show so that I can skip her runway entrance each week like she is the focus, and FFWD through her incessant babbling. A 2nd decider was having a DISNEY kid make a huge WOKE point about dancing with a female pro, and then every single week having the judges score her 10%+ higher every time. I guess we know who signs the checks eh Len and Inaba? I will not watch it again until Tyra is gone!

  5. It is not the talented people you bring on the show or the dancers! It is Tyra herself to blame for the low ratings! She cuts people off from talking and thinks this is her fashion show ! Get someone better to host!

  6. Tyra is a horrible host for DWTS. The network executives dont want to admit they made a mistake hiring her as host. If the executives tell her she stinks as a host and walks they will look incompetent. She’ll be out next season

  7. Of course they’re not going to admit they torpedoed the show by firing Tom and Erin and hiring Tyra “It’s All About Me” Banks. She’s ruined the show. It has nothing to do with the celebrities or pros.

  8. No ABC, the ratings are down because of Tyra. She has ruined the hosting gig and makes me cringe. I have liked all of the contestants this year (except for JoJo…she’s annoying IMHO). And I like the judges. And I LOVE the pros! The only component left is the host/hostess. And she is a trainwreck!

  9. I do not watch it anymore as I do not watch it because of Tyra Banks !!!! She is terrible!!! I miss Tom and Erin. They were fun and enjoyable. I hate when Trya even says the word Who!!!! Also I hate that elimination part! Let the viewers make the decision not Len!!!!

  10. I was a loyal viewer for 28 years, planned everything around Monday evening to watch. Why am I not watching anymore? Tyra. The show isn’t about the stars dancing, it’s the Tyra costume parade with stupid commentary from her ignorant self. I watched last year and cringed when she opened her mouth. This year I didn’t even tune in. The JoJo S was the last straw, when I found out we were having same sex partners shoved in our face I didn’t even try, I have joined the millions of others around the world and choose something on Netflix or Hulu. Sorry DWTS you changed the show and lost your audience!

  11. Are you kidding me? The network executives are blaming it on the talent? They apparently have not been watching the show because the talent this year is the best they’ve had in 30 seasons. Everyone in this group has amazing abilities. Bring back Tom and Erin and you’ll see the ratings spike again!

  12. Let’s get real – Tyra is a BIG disaster. But whoever made the deal seems to also made her executive co producer.
I can’t understand how or who made this self centered person the host.
Also her new plus size is disturbing to see. My eyes follow all her ample curves and it’s almost a mind game at this point wondering WTF is going on with her.
The Talent ? Really ? Who are these people ?
The Gayness – America was cool when the warm fuzzy little Lesbian came out but in the last few shows she’s come out like Noemi Malone in Showgirls. Too aggressive and hyper sexual. That’s the reasons they have been in the bottom
The Gay Guy – he’s clumsy and awkward yet they keep voting him on.
I like Len but he’s getting kind of old and Derek is in or out of the closet or what ? Bruno sit down already.
It’s lost it’s appeal by trying to be PC and of course the Talent.
The angry Russian dancers don’t help either.
Aren’t there any Americans who dance ?
End the show. It sucks but it really is TYRA
    She’s empty behind the eyes.

  13. People are frustrated that 75% of the “stars”
are already trained and/or professional dancers, but mostly, no one can stand Tyra.

  14. FIRST, get rid of Tyra. She is a terrible host and needs to go.

SECOND, get some real stars. It’s more like “Dancing With Who The Hell Are These People.”

I stopped watching when Tyra took over. Adios and good luck.

  15. ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS I STOPPED WATCHING BECAUSE OF CHANGING THE HOST. IF THEY WANTED TO ADD A HOST FINE BUT THE OTHERS WERE MUCH MORE FUN TO WATCH. IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF WHO THEY REPLACED THEM WITH, I JUST LIKED THEM BETTER.

  16. I am sorry but Tyra was great on America’s Next Top Model. But not on this show. I don’t like some of her comments to the competitors…Tyra should go.

  17. I think Tyra needs to go. She was GREAT on America’s Net Top Model; but this show is not for her. She keeps messing up, she wears the most GOD AWFUL outfits, and I miss TOM BERGERON. As far as the talent; it’s not a competition show when you have professional dancers as contestants..

  18. I stopped watching for two reasons. The first one is I can’t stand Tyra Banks. She has destroyed the fun of the show and most of her outfits, we laughed at how stupid she looked. The second reason is the fact that the people on the show are trying to shove gay people down our throats. It wouldn’t be bad if they wouldn’t make us watch 2 females dancing. It’s just so wrong but gratefully I haven’t even tried to watch it since I found out that two females would be dancing together. Just remove Tyra and stop the vulgar dancing of two females. I’m really expecting them to have two males dancing the next season and sadly there will be those who support that.

  19. The article states that the producer who made the decision to hire Tyra as the new host of the show does not want to lose face by terminating her so soon. He thinks it will make him look bad. Keeping her will make him look even worse. I would have so much more respect for him and everyone else involved if they stopped, admit they made a mistake, and moved on from this host. She is clearly not appealing to fans of the show. I personally like the talent this year. My husband and I are both huge fans of Cheryl Burke and are thrilled she is in the finale. However, I don’t think her partner is well known or liked enough to win. I think JoJo will win, but my FAVORITE is Iman Shumpert. He has the sweetest personality and has improved his performance each and every week.

  20. As long as they keep Tyra Banks, your ratings will continue to go down. I have watched this show since the beginning as the next approaches, I guarantee next season will be history. She would be better on a game show or a children’s play show. Even her body has changed to a considerable extra large. Definitely out of class with the professional dancers being so wonderful in appearance. Bring back Tom Bergeron. or your show will end up being history. It’s too bad we hear nothing but negative responses and not positive ones. Next year if she still attempts to be the hostess, it will be my last year to watch. By the way, this year was the best ever for talent. Look how early the 10’s showed up. So don’t give up on trying to replace Tyra. A child would be better.

  21. The problem is the ‘talent’? Well the pro dancers continue to be great and I think that the stars are great this season too.

The only crappy element is Tyra. She’s ridiculous. The show used to be fun and the focus was on the stars.

Tyra thinks it’s all about her and her terrible outfits. If you were attending a semi-formal evening event, is that really how you’d dress??

Every episode we’re subjected to her grand model entrance in some weird costume or other. Then more costume changes through the show.

I’ve watched DWTS since the beginning, but I’m done. This person has no idea how to host a show.

Tyra can go back to that Top Model show and leave DWTS alone. Not only are pro dancers leaving now, but viewers are. In droves.

Forget about saving face and maybe try and think about saving your audience. You ratings depend on us.

  22. Tyra Banks has ruined this show. She dresses like a clown and has no business even being there. I used to never miss an episode, I rarely watch it anymore. Another problem is that they have put too many experienced dancers on to compete against others that have no dancing background. Its all screwed up!!!
