“Dancing With the Stars” former pros and married couple Peta Murgatroyd and Maksim Chmerkovskiy first shared in a June Instagram post that they made the major life decision to leave California behind to raise their three sons in Florida.
In their post, Murgatroyd revealed a sign that read, “We moved to Florida!!!” as they danced happily with two of their three kids. Now, two months later, Murgatroyd shared why she and her family made the big move.

GettyTaking to Instagram Stories on Friday, August 21, former DWTS pro Peta Murgatroyd opened up to her fans about her and her husband’s big move to Boca Raton, Florida.
“We’ve always loved Florida [and] we’ve always loved the lifestyle here. We fell in love with Boca because it, kind of, has everything [and] the best of everything,” she began (via Us Weekly). “[We’re] really close to Miami, we have the beach, like. 11 minutes from my house, really top-rated schools, amazing sports for the boys [and a] great lifestyle.”
Murgatroyd shared that her friends initially worried she wouldn’t enjoy living in the Sunshine State because of the heat. However, she and Chmerkovskiy felt the move was the best decision for their family of five.
“Cali will always be a home of ours because we lived there for 20 years but, right now, I think this is what our fam needs and we are loving every second. It’s the best,” she said.
The former DWTS pros announced their move to Florida in a June 29 Instagram post. In the caption, Murgatroyd shared, “We did it… we moved to Florida.”
“Leaving behind the place we’d called home for so many years wasn’t easy, but sometimes the biggest leaps lead you exactly where you’re meant to be. The happiness, the slower pace, the sunshine, watching our boys love every second of it… it’s everything we hoped for and more… Worth every box. Every goodbye. Every unknown,” she wrote.
Murgatroyd Shares What She Loves About Florida
GettyContinuing to detail their move from Los Angeles to Florida, Murgatroyd shared that she especially appreciated the “convenience” of having everything they need close by since relocating.
“I would say convenience is key here. Everything is within a five-minute drive. I feel like there’s a CVS or Walgreens on every corner ‘cause it’s like in blocks with the communities,” she said. “I love it; I feel like at this stage of my life with three boys, I’m about convenience.”
She also said that their community and people in general have been extremely kind. “I’m like, ‘This never happened over there.’ The mothers are all really nice.” It’s also been great for their sons, who have already made friends.
“He has playdates, he has boys knocking on our door, saying ‘Hey come play, let’s go ride our bikes.’ It’s the best thing for me, and it’s all I want. I’m so happy,” she gushed.
Both Murgatroyd and Chmerkovskiy have had remarkable DWTS careers. Murgatroyd has competed in 15 seasons of the beloved series, winning the mirrorball trophy twice. Her last appearance in the ballroom was for season 32 in 2023.
As for Chmerkovskiy, he danced as a pro for 17 seasons and won the coveted trophy once. His last appearance on the show was in season 25 in 2017.
