Brooke Shields Reveals How Her Episode on ‘Friends’ Literally Changed Her Life

Brooke Shields is taking the time to reflect on the pivotal moment her entire life changed.

During an appearance on “Good Morning America,” the Hallmark actress, best known for her roles as Abby Knight in the “Flower Shop Mystery” films and Charlotte Thornton in “When Calls the Heart,” discussed how her guest-starring role in the hit television sitcom “Friends” completely shifted the trajectory of her career.

Shields Recalls How ‘Friends’ Made Her Finally Feel Like Herself

“30 years ago it premiered. You said at that point in your life, it was the first time you felt you were where you fully were supposed to be. Why was that?” host Michael Strahan asked Shields during her May 18 appearance on the show, referring to the original premiere of “Suddenly Susan.”

Shields starred as Susan Keane in the hit NBC sitcom “Suddenly Susan,” which ran for four seasons from 1996 to 2000. This was Shields’ first leading role in a regular television series.

“Until then, and really the ‘Friends’ episode that I was able to do, I wasn’t really ever asked or allowed, so to speak, to be comedic, you know, to be funny,” Shields said. “People would say, ‘well, you look the way you do, so you can’t be funny,’ you know, attractive women can’t be funny. So, it was this whole revelation for, I guess, other people because I just felt like I was in my own skin for the first time.”

Host Robin Roberts added, “I have to say, the ‘Friends’ episode that you’re in, one of my favorites.”

“It gave me an entirely new career,” Shields admitted. “I mean, that night, after we did the second pass where they let me do the crazy laugh, all these guys in suits came onto the sound stage, and I thought, ‘oh, it must be some kind of tour.'”

However, Shields found out the following day that they were actually “scouting” her. “I got a call, ‘would you like to do your own show?'” she recalled, calling it her “Lana Turner moment.”

“And it changed my life,” Shields concluded.

Shields made her return to Hope Valley in Season 13, more than a decade after her original appearance.

“I think having Charlotte there these episodes was a real commencement, a send-off, and a new chapter, right? So to bring her back, I don’t know if it would be the best thing because, right now, Little Jack has Nathan, and you wouldn’t want Charlotte’s recurrence to be convoluted or confused at all,” Shields said in an exclusive interview with TV Insider in March 2026.

Shields explained that Charlotte’s visit was the closing of a chapter. “I think it’s a fresh start,” she said. “And I think, whatever happens, I think all the boxes have been checked, and it’s been done with love. It’s a big moment of change for everybody.”

“She realized her importance in all of this, and that had to have been fabulous for her,” Shields told the outlet of Charlotte’s relationship with Little Jack. “I think she went back to her boarding house feeling very resolved, and yet ready to continue to do the work that she has established for herself in her environment.”
