Property Brother Jonathan Scott and actress Zooey Deschanel are headed for the altar, but it turns out their relationship almost fell apart before it ever really got going.
The HGTV star reveals in a new video on he and twin brother Drew Scott’s Instagram page that a lack of cell phone service nearly tanked the relationship right out of the gate.
In the video, Jonathan tells Drew and their parents Jim and Joanne Scott, “Immediately after I met Zooey, because we had done ‘Car Pool Karaoke,’ so we started talking every day and we hit it off. And then I went up into the mountains for three days, and she thought I ghosted her.”
As his family laughs, Jonathan continues, “So she’s thinking ‘this jerk, you know, he’s not returning my messages,’ and everything, but she had told me about this Canadian folk song that she really loved. So I did a selfie video, on horseback, atop the Rocky Mountains. And the very first text I sent when I came down to where there was cell service is I texted her that video.”
Canadian Folk Song Seals the Deal for Jonathan and Zooey
In the video, Jonathan’s mom Joanne asks him, “What was the song?” Jonathan reveals, “Four Strong Winds- Dad used to play it all the time.”
Joanna Scott reveals that the song was written by Ian Tyson, saying he was “one of the ranchers that was close by us and actually he was a client of mine at work.”
That’s when twin brother Drew Scott breaks into song, singing, “Four Strong Winds that Blow Lonely..” and Jonathan and their parents join in on the song.
In the caption to the post, the Property Brothers write, “Maybe that ‘Four Strong Winds’ video is what won @zooeydeschanel over, what do you all think? 😉”
Jonathan & Drew Scott Get Nostalgic and Take Fans Along
The Instagram clip is just part of a longer conversation with their parents that the brothers have posted on YouTube, where they talk about growing up on a ranch.
The Property Brothers have also posted a series of throwback pictures on their website.
They nostalgic snaps start with the day the twins were born. And they take fans through their childhood all way into the present.
Jonathan and Zooey Overcame the ‘Ghosting’ Misunderstanding
It seems the romantic video saved the day for Jonathan and Zooey.
The pair recently celebrated six years together.
In fact, on August 4, Jonathan Scott posted a video on Instagram celebrating the pair’s sixth “meet-a-versary” as he called it.
In the video, Jonathan Scott tells the camera that the pair met August 4, 2019. They were filming an episode of “Carpool Karaoke” with Jonathan’s twin brother Drew and Zooey’s sister Emily Deschanel.
“The four of us, we had so much fun. We hit it off right away. Zooey and I hit it off right away,” the Property Brother says in the video post.
“This is a day that I love to celebrate. It’s our ‘meet-a-versary’- that sounds kinda weird but, meet-a-versary? Sure, why not,” he laughs. “We hit it off so fast and have had so much fun,” Jonathan reminisces.
Jonathan goes on, telling his followers how that fateful day changed his life. He says, “A couple of years ago we got engaged atop Edinburgh Castle, but being in this relationship, never in a million years would I have known this is where I would be. But life takes you on those paths. And being a bonus dad is my favorite thing in the world and makes me so happy. I want to make sure that these guys have every opportunity that they can have.”
In 2020, he told People, “We literally make each other laugh nonstop. I have never been in a relationship where my partner is as romantic as, if not more romantic than, I am. I’m usually the one who carries the romantic load.”
He went on, “She’s smarter than me, she’s funnier than me, and she’s cuter than me! She’s a very considerate person, and that’s what I’m looking for. I had said before that the most important thing for me was a sense of humor. But you have to be kind, and she definitely is.”
