80s Pop Star is ‘Flattered’ Over Rihanna’s Cover of Her Song: ‘It’s Always Super Cool’

Rihanna has taken on her newest role as Smurfette in the 2025 film, “Smurfs,” and one of her songs is a 1980s classic.

“Heaven Is a Place on Earth” is a 1987 hit song from Belinda Carlisle’s second album, “Heaven on Earth,” and she expressed her excitement over it being revived by the “Umbrella” singer.

“Wow, itโ€™s always super cool. A lot of those songs have transcended being just a song, so when I hear somebody else doing it, I mean, I canโ€™t help but be flattered,” she told Extra on August 11.

Carlisle, who is known for being the lead singer of The Go-Go’s, said of her latest Coachella performance, “We got onstage and all of a sudden, it was like 20,000 people came out of nowhere and the demographic was from young kids โ€ฆ to people my age and older. They actually loved it.”

“We have a lot of fun, same jokes, same dynamics, same button pushing, but weโ€™re a lot kinder to each other,” the “Our Lips Are Sealed” singer said of her band.

Carlisle is Coming Out With New Music

Since leaving The Go-Go’s in 1985, Carlisle worked on her solo career and announced her new album in June.

“I am thrilled to announce my new album โ€˜Once Upon A Time In Californiaโ€™ will be out on August 29th! You can listen to the first single โ€˜The Air That I Breatheโ€™ on all streaming platforms, and pre-order the album on vinyl or CD here: https://belinda.lnk.to/california,” she wrote on Facebook.

Carlisle told Classic Pop of the inspiration for her newest album, “I was born and raised in California at a time when music was an important part of Californian culture.”

ย “I lived and breathed music, it was my great escape — a refuge of fantasy and imagination,” she added.

The singer continued, “This collection of songs is the best representation of what I loved back then that I could think of — listening to it brings back so many memories of a time and a California that doesnโ€™t really exist anymore.”

“Thatโ€™s not meant to sound like a bad thing, itโ€™s just different — there was an innocence and energy back then that was unique and magical. Things I doubt will ever be felt in quite the same way again. Hereโ€™s to the California of my dreams,” Carlisle said.

Along with “One,” Carlisle will cover hits from Dionne Warwick, Gordon Lightfoot, Jim Croce, Harry Nilsson, and The Youngbloods.
