Beloved music icon Phil Collins shared a rare update on his health and opened up about his future plans.
During an interview with BBC Breakfast of Friday, the Oscar-winning musician was asked if he’d perform again.
“I can’t really see it happening, but I’m healthier now than I have been for quite a while,” Collins replied.
The “In the Air Tonight” hitmaker has not performed live since his legendary prog-rock band, Genesis, concluded their “Last Domino Tour” in March 2022.
Phil Collins’ Health Issues Over the Years
In January, Collins, 75, revealed he’s under 24-hour care due to complications from a spinal injury in 2007. The injury caused nerve damage that left him unable to play drums.
“[It’s] an ongoing thing,” Collins said in an interview with BBC’s “Eras” podcast. “You know, I have a 24-hour live-in nurse to make sure I take my medication as I should do. I’ve had challenges with my knee… I had everything that could go wrong with me, did go wrong with me.”
GettyCollins has also undergone five knee surgeries and faced kidney problems due to heavy drinking.
“I enjoyed coming off tour. Coming off the road… I thought, right, I’m gonna do all those things that I couldn’t do,” Collins shared in a 2021 interview with BBC Breakfast. “I guess I had too much of it. I was never drunk, although I fell over a couple of times. But it is just one of those things that happened and it all caught up with me, and I spent months in hospital.”
The incident served as his wake-up call, prompting him to stay sober. “It’s just been a difficult, interesting, frustrating last few years,” he continued. “But it’s all right now.”
Phil Collins Shares Future Plans
Collins also revealed in his latest interview that he was asked to perform at the 2026 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where he is set to be inducted for the second time.
“They asked me if I would perform and I said no, because you’ve got to be match fit to do something like that,” the eight-time Grammy Award winner shared. “You can’t just go on stage and — you’re gonna have to rehearse and then by that point, if you’ve not been singing, your voice is going to be shot, and then that’s not gonna be good. So I’d rather not do it.”
Still, Collins is not ruling out a return to the stage or the possibility of creating new music in the future.
“But whether I would go out again, I would contemplate, yeah,” the singer added. “I’m constantly saying to myself, I better go back down into my studio at home.”
And it seems fans still have plenty to look forward to, as Collins revealed that he still has plenty of new songs in his head.
“I’ve got lots of lyrical ideas I write down,” he revealed. “And there are things that are half-formed and a couple of things that are finished. So, you know, there’s things that I can get my teeth into to start working on.”
Collins continued, “When I look back, I’ve lived a charmed life. I’ve really enjoyed most of it, 99% of it.”
