“Cocaine Bear” director Elizabeth Banks took to her Instagram account on Friday, January 16 to mourn the loss of one of the movie’s top talents, Isiah Whitlock Jr. Whitlock died on December 30, 2025 of an unspecified illness. He played Bob, a local detective, in the box office hit.
Banks captioned a set of Instagram photos featuring the actor, who was 71 when he died, “We lost a sweet gentle soulful artist recently. He made everything better. Rest peacefully Isiah.” Bryan Cranston, Spike Lee, and Viola Davis who among those who shared tributes shortly afterwards.
In the comments of Banks’ tribute, fans fondly remembered the talent. One wrote, “I loved him in everything I saw him in. I absolutely loved ‘Cocaine Bear.'”
Another person chimed in, “He glowed onscreen and I knew the funny was on its way. I was a fan and his sunshine will be missed.”
A third fan wrote, “He was so gifted in all his roles. Condolences to you on losing your friend. Condolences to his family.”
Isiah Whitlock Jr. Previously Discussed His ‘Cocaine Bear’ Role
In a 2023 interview, Whitlock spoke about his role in the film. He said, “I portray the character Bob, and I’m a detective. I’ve been looking for these drug dealers for years. I finally sort of get my chance to go after them and make this one big, lifelong case. I have a very big interest in trying to solve this mystery that everybody’s been trying to solve. But I wanna be the guy. This would make my career. Which hasn’t been going that well up until this point.”
After summarizing his character’s story, Whitlock talked about the overarching themes of the horror adventure comedy. He explained, “‘Cocaine Bear’ is about humanity. It’s about how we go about dealing with the elements. Dealing with nature. I mean, it’s in the script: ‘Cocaine Bear.’ But then you have to say, ‘What else is there?'”
Isiah Whitlock Jr.’s Death Was Announced by His Manager
Brian Liebman announced Whitlock had passed away in a December 30, 2025 Instagram post. The talent manager wrote, “It is with tremendous sadness that I share the passing of my dear friend and client Isiah Whitlock Jr. If you knew him – you loved him. A brilliant actor and even better person. May his memory forever be a blessing. Our hearts are so broken. He will be very, very missed.”
An obituary by The Hollywood Reporter listed several Spike Lee projects among Whitlock’s notable films, including “25th Hour,” “She Hate Me,” “Red Hook Summer,” “Chi-Raq,” “BlacKkKlansman” and “Da 5 Bloods.”
He also had standout roles in “The Wire” and “The Residence.”
