Kerry Washington Reveals Jennifer Lopez Was Her Childhood Dance Teacher: What She Remembers

Kerry Washington is reflecting on a childhood memory that still feels special years later, one that ties back to an early connection with former American Idol judge and mega star Jennifer Lopez. Speaking on a podcast, Good Hang With Amy Poehler, Washington shared that Lopez played a small but meaningful role in her early dance training, long before either of them became household names.

‘She Taught Me How to Dance’

Washington looked back fondly on her early training under a beloved instructor, Larry Maldonado, who led a dance program at a local Boys & Girls Club.

“She taught me how to dance!” Washington said, remembering how Jennifer Lopez stepped in during a challenging time for the program.

When Maldonado became ill, Lopez helped guide the classes, offering encouragement and support to young dancers like Washington, who was just 8 years old.

The experience left a lasting impression, shaping not only her early love for dance but also her appreciation for those who show up when it matters most.

One memory, in particular, has stayed with her over the years, offering an early glimpse of Jennifer Lopez’s presence and talent.

“I remember, right before she left to go off to LA to pursue her dream of being famous,” she said, “she did this duet dance with Larry, who had fallen ill. So, he must have gotten better and was back. And it was very risqué. We weren’t supposed to watch it. The girls were like, ‘No, this is not for you.’ It was like later on in the dance program, but we all hid in the wings cause we couldn’t not watch it.”

Looking back, Washington said the performance left a lasting impression on her.

“It was beautiful. She was beautiful,” she said. “She’s always been a real inspiration for me.”

Over the years, Washington has continued to credit Lopez as an early source of inspiration, even reflecting on their shared past with a sense of humor.

“She’s never hired me to dance in any of her videos,” she said with a laugh. “I don’t know what that says.”

She added that she has yet to collaborate with Lopez or another familiar face from her early years, Gwyneth Paltrow.

“You guys, I’m good,” Washington teased. “We have history. I’m available. Gwyneth? Jennifer?”

Today, Washington continues to expand her career with new projects, including an upcoming Apple TV thriller alongside Elisabeth Moss and Kate Mara.

For Washington, those early dance classes remain more than just a memory. They represent the start of a journey shaped by creativity, encouragement, and a moment that continues to stay with her.
