Oscar-winning actor Robert Redford has sadly passed away at the age of 89. The New York Times, reports that Redford passed away in his sleep at his home in Utah on the morning of September 16. Cindi Berger, who is the chief executive of Rogers & Cowan PMK, announced his passing in a statement, but no cause of death was given.

“Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah–the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly,” Berger said in a statement to CNN. “The family requests privacy.”

In 1969, Redford starred in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which kicked off a legendary festival. At the same time, he purchased 5,000 acres in Utah and went on to open Sundance Mountain Resort to the public.

In 1980, the Sundance Institute was formed and in 1981, they held their first lab for 17 independent filmmakers.

The first film festival was held in 1985, initially known as the 1985 U.S. Film Festival, but later renamed the Sundance Film Festival. And since 1991,

CODA became the first Sundance film to win an Oscar for Best Picture at the 94th Academy Awards. Institute-supported documentaries have won 20 Oscars, according to the Festival’s website. And with that, Coda became the first Sundance film to win an Oscar for Best Picture in 2022.
