Beloved actress Sigourney Weaver has revealed she once wrote a letter to a legendary British music star โ and it was a letter she hopes the intended recipient never got to read.
Weaver, 76, was talking to the eponymous host of “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on a recent episode of the late-night news talk show when she was subjected to the Colbert Questionnaire and admitted to being a superfan of the star she wrote to (per Entertainment Weekly).
So who was that star? It was none other than a member of the most iconic band of all-time: The Beatles. And the member in question? The late, great John Lennon.
Weaver said she dropped the letter off at one of Lennon’s regular haunts. She hoped the proprietors would hand it to the star on his next visit.
Sigourney Weaver Hopes the Restaurant ‘Threw It Away’
GettyWeaver told Stephen Colbert that Lennon was her favorite member of the Beatles โ the other members being Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr โ and described exactly how she went about her attempts to contact him.
She explained, “I wrote a several-page letter on lavender stationery with purple ink. ‘Dear John.’ It was like five pages front and back. And I folded it up. I put it in an envelope, and I dropped it off at this restaurant that I heard he went to.”
Weaver had no recollection of exactly what she had written in the letter. However, she seemed pleased about that, as she imagined the contents might leave her looking a little red-faced in hindsight.
Of the embarrassing letter, Weaver added, “I hope they threw it away.”
A Beatles Concert Was the First One Weaver Ever Attended
GettyDuring her interview with Colbert, Weaver โ whose movie credits include the likes of 1977’s “Annie Hall,” 1979’s “Alien,” 1984’s “Ghostbusters,” and 2009’s “Avatar” (credits info per IMDb) โ was asked what the first concert she ever attended was. Of course, her answer was the Beatles.
Weaver estimated being around 12 years old when she saw the legendary Liverpudlians at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles 1961. However, Colbert stepped in to remind her that they didn’t arrive in America until 1964.
Weaver had no trouble recalling the volume of the crowd at the show, however, describing her memories as “Girls screaming all around me.” She added, “You couldn’t hear [the Beatles] at all.”
The actress enjoyed a busy 2025, appearing on stage in London in “The Tempest” in her West End debut, and in three movies; the romantic sci-fi action horror “The Gorge,” the action thriller “Dust Bunny,” and the epic sci-fi action sequel “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” This year, she’s set to appear in the “Star Wars” spin-off movie “The Mandalorian and Grogu.”
Of course, John Lennon was tragically shot and killedย outside his New York City apartment building on December 8, 1980. He was only 40 years old at the time, but he left an incredible musical legacy that will last forever.
May John Lennon rest in eternal peace.
