Tim Curry spent decades building a celebrated acting career while keeping his life remarkably private, away from the cameras.
Curry, best known to generations of fans for playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” died Tuesday night at age 80, according to TMZ. Sources told the outlet that Curry died at his Los Angeles home after dealing with serious health issues for more than a decade.
Law enforcement sources told TMZ that police responded to Curry’s home at 11:23 p.m. Tuesday and that authorities do not suspect foul play.
While Curry spent much of his life in the public eye, he rarely shared details about his romantic relationships. He never married and did not have children, according to his official website.

Curry never married, although he acknowledged during his life that he once came close to marriage.
His official website states that the actor referred to being “almost married” many years earlier during an interview. He did not publicly identify a longtime partner, and his website noted that even people who maintained his biography knew little about that part of his life.
Curry was similarly direct when reporters tried to get him to discuss his sexuality or relationships.
“I don’t talk about who I’m (expletive) or whether I’m in love,” Curry told “After Dark” in March 1975. “It’s of paramount interest to me and very little interest to your readers. If it is of interest to them, then (expletive) ‘em.”
Curry maintained that approach throughout his career. Even as his fame grew, details about his relationships largely remained outside the public record.
He also never had children.
Instead, Curry’s public biography remained overwhelmingly focused on his work, which stretched across theater, film, television and voice acting.

Although Curry said little publicly about his romantic life, some details about his upbringing and family were known.
Curry was born on April 19, 1946. His father served as a Royal Navy chaplain, while his mother worked as a school secretary. He also had an older sister, Judith, and later became an uncle to a nephew and two nieces.
His father died at age 45 when Curry was just 12 years old. His mother died in June 1999 following a two-year cancer battle, while Judith died in 2001.
Curry did not come from a theatrical family. His maternal grandfather also served in the Navy, while his paternal grandfather worked as a miner and builder.
Before beginning his professional acting career, Curry attended the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom from 1965 until 1968. His official website specifically addressed reports that he attended Cambridge University, noting that those claims were incorrect.
Before college, Curry spent a gap year traveling and working on boats in Morocco, France and Belgium.
He graduated from Birmingham in 1968 and landed a role in the stage production of “Hair” that same year.

Curry eventually became internationally recognized for his performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
The 1975 movie did not immediately become a mainstream hit, but it found a new audience through midnight screenings and developed into an enduring cult classic.
Despite rumors over the years that Curry disliked being associated with the movie, his official website said that wasn’t true and that the actor had “only ever spoken fondly of Rocky Horror.”
Curry eventually settled in Los Angeles in 1988 and continued working across film, television and voice roles during his career.
