‘60s Film Star Tippi Hedren Celebrates 96th Birthday 2 Years After Dementia Diagnosis

‘60s film star Tippi Hedren, 96, whose breakout movie role was in Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds,” was seen for the first time in one year as she bravely faces dementia.

Hedren’s dementia diagnosis was revealed in Feb. 2024. She kept a low profile over the last two years, but her family made sure to celebrate her birthday this year by gathering at her daughter Melanie Griffith’s house on Monday, Jan. 19.

Hedren looked modish in a chic sweater and black pants. Her iconic blonde hair, one of her standout attributes that helped her rise to fame, was a powerful reminder of her timeless beauty.

Hedren’s granddaughter Dakota Johnson couldn’t be seen in birthday photos obtained by Daily Mail. Nonetheless, her special day was well spent with plenty of others, including her grandson Alexander Bauer, who held her hand as he guided her down a set of stairs.

The last time Hedren was seen in real time was when Griffith wished her a happy 95th birthday in an Instagram post. At the time, the film star could be seen blowing out candles on a mint green cake. Her daughter captioned the video, “My beautiful Mama turned 95 yesterday! She’s happy, healthy and feisty!!”

Hedren’s representatives revealed in Feb. 2024 that she was suffering from dementia. Although the exact date of when she was diagnosed is unknown, the Daily Mail reported that Hedren’s health battle was shared with the public after journalist Gustavo Egusquiza requested an interview with the “I Heart Huckabees” actress.

Hedren’s reps were forced to turn down the interview and instead confirmed that she not only had dementia but it had also taken away the memory of her acting career.

“She has dementia and is unable to remember her career at all. She just turned 94, so unfortunately, time has taken its toll,” her representative shared, adding that she was “no longer able to be interviewed due to health reasons.”

Hedren’s debut film was an uncredited role in the 1950 film “The Petty Girl.” She went on to appear in over 80 film and television roles, including notable parts in Charlie Chaplin’s “A Countess From Hong Kong,” the politically satirical film “Citizen Ruth” and her passion project, “Roar,” which led her to launch her Roar Foundation to advocate against the commercial use and breeding of big cats and exotic animals.
