‘Today’ Show Host Bravely Opens Up About Grief & Healing After Husband’s Passing

Sheinelle Jones is opening up about life after the loss of her husband, Uche Ojeh. Four months after his death, the Today co-host, 47, returned to NBC’s morning show on Sept. 5, marking her first day back since taking an extended leave of absence in late 2024.

Ojeh, 45, died following a battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. In a pre-taped interview with Savannah Guthrie, Jones reflected on her grief and shared heartfelt memories of her late husband.

“My Heart Is Shattered”: Jones Opens Up on Grief & Loss

“My heart is shattered in a million pieces,” Jones shared. “The life that I’ve known since I was 19 is no more. I’ve always wanted kids and I have three kids of my own now and they’ve lost their dad. And I’m their mom. It sucks.”

Finding Beauty in a “Nightmare”

The mother of three reflected on the agony of seeing her strong, athletic husband fight cancer.

“It is a nightmare to watch a 45-year-old do two triathlons and live and breathe off of soccer, and his kids … To take a guy like that and watch him have to deal with this fight was a nightmare. But the way he fought it and the way we rallied together and the way we saw the best of humanity, that was beautiful,” she said.

Jones recalled their time in the hospital, where nurses called them the “love birds.” “We would just hold hands and look at each other and say, ‘I love you.’ That’s what I mean by ‘beautiful nightmare,’ because I found beauty in the nightmare,” she explained.

Grief, Faith & Moving Forward

Jones admitted she believed her husband would survive his illness and tried to balance work with supporting him through treatment. “I would do the show and then hop in the car and go be with him during chemo,” she revealed. “I thought, ‘I’m not faking it. My joy is real.’”

Now, her grief has reshaped how she sees emotions. “I don’t run away from crying anymore when it comes to grief,” she said. “I see it as, ‘Okay, here comes my cleansing rain. And it’s okay.’”

She credits Ojeh’s faith during his most challenging moments for helping her find strength. “I watched him in his toughest moments, his faith is what gave him peace. So I think, ‘Okay, if Uche can have faith, when his life is on the line, surely I can and surely we all can.’”

Honoring Uche Ojeh’s Legacy

Returning to Today, Jones said she wants her story to inspire others facing loss. “Cancer doesn’t have to steal our joy. We can grieve but we can also still try to move forward. We don’t move on, but we move forward with our loved ones,” she explained.

She added, “Honestly, I feel like Uche’s heartbeat lives on in mine. So I owe it to him to just squeeze the most I can out of this thing.”

Jones closed by asking viewers to see her laughter as resilience. “If you see me now and you see me laughing, or you turn on the morning show and I’m laughing or having a good time, you root for me because I’m fighting for my joy.”

After the interview aired, Jones rejoined her Today colleagues on the couch, thanking them for their love and support, calling them her “oxygen” during this painful chapter.

She and Ojeh had been married for nearly two decades and shared three children: Kayin, 15, and twins Clara and Uche, 12. Watch the gut-wrenching full interview here.
