The music world was devastated on August 6 when Sandra Detamore, wife of Tommy Detamore, announced that the musician had passed away. A fixture in country music, the 70-year-old wore many hats, including those of producer, music engineer, and guitarist.
“Tommy was and will always be remembered as a respected musician, producer, collaborator, mentor, and creative force in Country Music,” Sandra wrote in a Facebook post. “Not to mention the love of my life. His work has and will always leave a lasting mark in the country music community. His Godgiven gift for playing and producing music allowed him to lift others up and help shape the sound of country music we hear today. Dr. Tom.. Sir Punchalot …Drama Papa … The Man …were just a few names people called him. Just recently we were celebrating another project he produced and played on that went platinum.”
While she doesn’t say what the cause of death was, she does mention that it “was so sudden.”
From Cherry Ridge Studio to the Grand Ole Opry: Inside Detamore’s Storied Career
Detamore became renowned on the steel guitar after picking it up in 1981 and was inducted into the Texas Steel Guitar Association Hall of Fame in 2019. He also earned the title of Steel Guitar Player of the Year at the 2025 Texas Country Music Awards.
He made his home in Texas, opening the Cherry Ridge Studio in 1991. He recorded and performed with numerous artists over the years, including Mickey Dolenz, Bill Kirchen, Tommy Alverson, Gary Nicholson, Jim Lauderdale, and others. Detamore also toured with Moe Bandy for seven years and played at the Grand Ole Opry many times.
Survived by Wife of 41 Years and Son, His Musical Legacy Lives On
Detamore’s last social media post was on July 25, 2026. He thanked the Cowtown Society of Western Music for giving him the “Hero of Western Swing” award, which he said he couldn’t attend. Along with his wife of 41 years, he’s survived by his son, Thomas Detamore.
His legacy lives on through the countless recordings, productions, and performances he left behind, as well as the artists he mentored along the way. Fans and fellow musicians have been sharing their own tributes and memories online since news of his passing broke, remembering him as both a talented musician and a friend in the country music community.
