You would think that after being shot, put into a coma, and suffering from months of paralysis that General Hospital’s Drew (Cameron Mathison) would be a changed man these days. However, as viewers of the soap have witnessed, he’s more self-righteous, pompous, and villainous than ever.
When Drew’s character first took a turn into the dark side following Jason’s (Steve Burton) umpteenth return from death and Drew’s split from Carly (Laura Wright), the former congressman became this despicable human being. He slept with his nephew’s wife, manipulated a little boy just to cause further friction between Michael (Rory Gibson) and Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), got married to Willow though he slept with her mother, faked a will to kick Tracy (Jane Elliot) out of the Quartermaine Estate, and the list goes on. All of this, combined with his jealousy of Jason, Michael, and Sonny (Maurice Benard), made Drew unbearable to watch.
Fast forward to the present, and Drew looks determined to continue being a provocateur and menace of Port Charles. But one has to ask: Will Drew face a more pressing wake-up call to change his ways, or will he fully lean into heinous inclinations?
Would Drew Learn His Lesson If He’s Sent Back to Prison?
ABCGeneral Hospital viewers know Drew was once sent to prison in an effort to spare Carly. That decision certainly is a part of his villain origin story, but could another prison stint help course-correct his ways when clearly near-death experiences couldn’t? Possibly. Scout (Kayden Brenna Tokarski) is a teenager now and is without Sam (Kelly Monaco). Drew may not want to go to prison, leaving Scout behind in her formative adolescent years.
However, given his lack of a sparkling personality and ability to get under everyone’s skin, he’s put another target on his back, with people wanting to see him taken down a notch. Brennan (Chris McKenna) still has proof that Drew committed federal crimes that could land him behind bars if that news came to light. Could someone like Nina (Cynthia Watros), Willow, or even Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) get their hands on the proof and turn Drew in to make their life easier? Sure. Perhaps facing a trial and getting convicted would set Drew on a path of remorse and rebound.
Now some may think Drew being sent to prison would only feed his thirst for revenge on the people of Port Charles, but hey, it’s the soap world, so you never really know until it happens.
Could Drew Lean Into the Darkness to Become the New Kingpin?
With Sonny and Jason retiring from their lives of crime, there’s been a lot of speculation about what may happen to the underworld of Port Charles. Would it disappear, or would someone else step up to run things? Well, despite all of his raving about his hatred for what Sonny does and keeping Scout away from Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) for her “safety,” Drew loves power. And at the moment, with him being a town pariah and no longer a congressman, he doesn’t have any. So, stepping into Sonny’s shoes seems like an intriguing idea.
It’s possible that Drew could believe he’d keep Port Charles safe and run an organized crime ring with a lot more discretion and care than Sonny ever has. Additionally, it’s worth noting that Drew once worked with Sidwell (Carlo Rota), knowing Sidwell was a dangerous criminal. So Drew really isn’t above the mob.
