General Hospital’s Jason & Sonny Out of the Mob: Is Port Charles’ Underworld Over?

It’s like the end of an era on General Hospital, as Jason (Steve Burton) just resigned from Sonny’s (Maurice Benard) criminal enterprise. Jason could no longer justify putting his parenting duties on the back burner. And if that surprise resignation wasn’t enough, in the General Hospital episode airing on August 6, Sonny informed Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) that he was calling it quits on the mafia as well. No longer will Sonny be the Dimpled Kingpin of Port Charles.

These recent developments are no doubt a relief for Jason and Sonny’s families, who have routinely had to worry about the fate of these two men as well as be extra cautious about their own lives. However, for viewers at home, without Jason and Sonny running their business, the question arises about the fate of the Port Charles underworld.

Months ago, Jason and Sonny were trying to make plans to change their careers. Unfortunately, after Michael (Rory Gibson) was caught in the penthouse explosion and Sidwell (Carlo Rota) made too many viable threats against nearly all of Port Charles, Jason and Sonny wanted to deal with Sidwell first. But now that Sidwell is in prison, Jason and Sonny can seemingly retire from the mob in peace. If that proves to be the case, does that mean all the organized crime in town will disappear? Not for nothing, there have been no major players introduced or reintroduced to the show’s canvas as of late.

In fact, arguably the biggest criminal presence in Port Charles resides in Willow (Katelyn MacMullen), Drew (Cameron Mathison), and the WSB, all of whom are supposed to be representatives of the right side of the law. Is there enough drama on General Hospital among these three entities to keep things spicy?

Should ‘General Hospital’ Bring Back Johnny or Jerry?

As much chaos as Willow, Drew, and the WSB bring to the soap, I personally think I’d like to see some criminal presence on the soap. At this point, the criminality has been woven into the fabric of the series. That being said, if Jason and Sonny are truly gone, I propose the powers that be usher the return of either Johnny Zacchara (Brandon Barash) or Jerry Jacks (Sebastian Roché).

Johnny being released from prison and returning to the criminal world in Port Charles would be interesting to watch, given how much Sonny loathes him, yet Sonny’s family adores him. Johnny would seemingly not be a threat to the main players of Port Charles, and he would likely not kill Sonny just for the sake of people like Carly (Laura Wright).

Jerry, on the other hand, would be a walking ball of fireworks. Josslyn (Eden McCoy) may be his niece, and he may have had a romance with Alexis (Nancy Grahn), but he is a man loyal only to himself. His being back in town would actually threaten Sonny’s ability to retire, as he’d probably want to protect his loved ones from Jerry’s antics.

But hey, these are just my initial thoughts. Do you think General Hospital needs a criminal element to keep up the drama?
