‘90s Star Reveals Why They Stopped Acting After Robin Williams Passed

Sarah Michelle Gellar, who began acting in the ‘90s and rose to fame from her role in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” opened up on the “Shut Up Evan” podcast on Wednesday, Jan. 7, about how the death of Robin Williams led her to take a step away from her acting career.

Gellar had starred alongside Williams in the sitcom “The Crazy Ones,” which shaped her fondness for the beloved actor. Although the CBS show would only air for one season, canceling just months before Williams’ death in August 2014, Gellar said the star’s passing was the wake-up call she needed to refocus herself.

“I had children back to back. I started ‘The Crazy Ones’ when my son was 3 months old. I was breastfeeding the entire time,” the mom-of-two shared. “Then, Robin passed away, and everything just sort of hit me.”

She continued, “The postpartum hit me, and that loss was so huge. I felt a little directionless for the first time in my life. I thought, maybe that’s my sign that I’m not living the moments enough because they can go away so quickly. At that point, I just said I needed to take a break.”

When Did Sarah Michelle Gellar Start Acting Again?

After eight years away from acting, Gellar decided to return to the big screen in 2022 when she was cast in “Clerks III” and “Do Revenge.”

Having been able to spend time with her family during her retreat, Gellar, who shares daughter Charlotte, 16, and son Rocky, 13, with her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., was able to be the mom she never realized she needed to be at the height of her acting career.

“I’m so glad I did [it] on so many levels,” Gellar said. “First of all, I’ll never get that time back with my kids. I didn’t miss a show, a performance, a first step, a lost tooth.”

The “Scooby-Doo” actress continued, “Every moment I was able to be there for, and that’s not something you can do as a working actor. Our days are long. We travel a lot. I couldn’t have done that.”

After Gellar was welcomed back to the film industry with open arms, she felt gratitude for her fans, telling podcast host Evan Ross Katz that “when you do step away from acting, you never know if there’s going to be a career to go back to.”

The “I Know What You Did Last Summer” star continued, “It doesn’t matter who you are. Sometimes audiences move on; that’s OK, that’s acceptable. I’m very, very grateful that I have found that’s not been the case, and there’s still a place for me.”
