Snoop Dogg has apologized after receiving widespread pushback for his comments about the LGBTQ+ representation in Pixar’s 2022 movie “Lightyear.”
During an episode of the “It’s Giving” podcast, posted on August 20, 2025, the 16-time Grammy winner and coach on “The Voice” complained that the kids’ movie included a scene with a lesbian couple and their child, noting that he didn’t know how to explain their relationship to his curious grandkids and that it made him “scared to go to the movies.”
On August 31, 2025, Deadline first reported that Snoop has since apologized in writing, responding to an Instagram post in which Emmy- and Grammy-winner T.S. Madison told TMZ that “it is time to have these uncomfortable conversations” rather than refrain from reflecting different types of families and relationships in the media.
“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” Snoop wrote in the comments, adding, “all my gay friends no what’s up they been calling me with love 💗 my bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old 😳teach me how to learn I’m not perfect 🙌🏿🙏🏾🐾”
Fans React to Snoop Dogg’s Comment
Snoop’s apology was in response to clips from a TMZ interview with Madison, a frequent judge on “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” in which she said parents need to be able to “explain to your children that other things exist in the world outside of what you have deemed normal in your own home.”
Madison added, “We’ve always, as queer people, been pushed to the side and swept under (the rug), so it is time for us to have these uncomfortable conversations. Maybe not at (age) four – maybe Papa will ‘explain that to you in a year or so, just watch the movie.'”
Hundreds of people responded to Snoop’s comment on the post, with some insisting he did nothing wrong and others expressing their appreciation that the rapper, known as Papa Snoop to his grandkids, acknowledged he was open to learning how to handle such situations better.
“I understand,” one person wrote. “In order to properly inform our children, give us an opportunity to prepare. There has been dozens of times I’ve had my back against the wall and had to explain something unprepared. Then I had to research how to explain it and come back to my kids again to clarify.”
Another commented, “Snoop did what he knew to do at the time and TS needs to show some grace. Everyone not against the gay and trans community. This is something newly publicly known to us. It’s going to take some time to undo the misconceptions we may feel about it. Give us grace and room to grow. Damn.”
Snoop Dogg Originally Said Questions From His Grandson ‘Threw Me For a Loop’
During his August 20 appearance on the “It’s Giving” podcast, Snoop recalled one of his grandkids asking him about a scene in which two moms were shown holding their baby.
Snoop said, “They’re like, ‘She had a baby — with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman!’”
The rapper said he immediately thought, “Oh [expletive], I didn’t come in for this [expletive]. I just came to watch the [expletive] movie.’”
Noting that his grandson asked again how two women had a baby together, Snoop said, “It [expletive] me up. I’m like, scared to go to the movies. Y’all throwing me in the middle of [expletive] that I don’t have an answer for… It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
Snoop’s comments sparked a firestorm of controversy. A spokesperson for the LGBT Foundation told Newsweek, “Seeing LGBTQ+ people on screen is powerful and helps everyone feel seen. Negative remarks from high-profile figures cause real harm by fueling stigma and undermining hard-won progress.”
