Grammy-Nominated R&B Artist, 56, Makes Heartbreaking Announcement

The voice of Montell Jordan practically defined a whole moment in the 90s. If you’ve ever yelled “This is how we do it!” at the top of your lungs at a party (be honest), you know exactly what he brought to the table. But now, Jordan is facing something way more serious than chart success. The R&B legend previously revealed that he had prostate cancer; and now, he’s breaking the news that it’s back.

A Song That Defined a Generation

Jordan wasn’t just another R&B singer in the 90s; he was the guy who dropped an anthem that never left the culture. “This Is How We Do It” hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1995, and almost three decades later, it still shuts down dance floors.

After stepping away from mainstream music to focus on faith (he’s a pastor now) and family. But Jordan’s influence never really left. He’s always had that blend of smooth confidence and heart, and that same energy is what he’s carrying into this fight.

The Initial Announcement

Back in 2024, Jordan chose his birthday to share something deeply personal on Instagram. “Today is my birthday. I love you. I’m doing something unthinkable,” part of his caption read. “I need your help. I only have a few simple requests.”

Doctors had discovered Stage 1 prostate cancer during a PSA screening. Jordan went through surgery to have his prostate removed, and for a moment, it looked like he was in the clear. He thought his story would be about survival. But it seems the fight isn’t over.

What’s Happening Now?

On September 3, 2025, Jordan explained the heartbreaking update. In an exclusive interview with TODAY he said, “I always imagined I would be telling my prostate cancer story from the other side of prostate cancer because I had a radical prostatectomy surgery. My prostate was removed. There were clear margins.”

But nearly a year later, the cancer returned. “Close to a year post-prostatectomy, I still need to go back and have additional treatments because it’s (been) detected that there is still cancer. We thought it was all confined, isolated to the prostate. Apparently, that was not the case.”

Jordan also shared that he’s starting radiation. “Early detection is the thing that allows me to have a choice to treat (my cancer) and live and to continue giving myself the best quality of life possible. (It’s) a radiated treatment that is specifically focused on that lymph node part of my body. It is a seven-and-a-half week interruption of life to make sure that I have a longer life.”

He also stressed the importance of being real about the emotional side. “I’m trying to give a template for people that get diagnosed with this to, one, know they have options available to them. And, two, in the mix of what that looks like, it’s OK to cry. It’s OK to shake your fist at God. It’s OK to navigate and do what you need to do, but doing nothing is not an option.”

Jordan’s message to men everywhere is clear: don’t wait, get checked. “I want to be a part of this solution. Your life is worth more than what a stigma presents or what a taboo presents. I need you guys to get checked.”
