Legendary actress Diane Keaton tragically passed away on Oct. 11 at age 79 in California. “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness,” a spokesperson told PEOPLE.”

And with that, PEOPLE is providing some additional information on her final months. The outlet reports that her “health had taken a sharp turn in recent months.”

“It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit,” a source told PEOPLE. “In her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private. Even longtime friends weren’t fully aware of what was happening.”

The actress has been seen publicly in roughly a year, with her last public appearance being last Christmas when she was holiday shopping.

PEOPLE further reports that Keaton listed her “dream home” in March which came as a surprise to many as she “said she had planned to remain there permanently.”

Keaton moved into the house in 2017, spent eight years doing an extensive renovation. She even wrote a book about it titled The House that Pinterest Built. But she listed the five-bedroom, seven-bathroom property for $29 million.

It was in a 2017 interview with Wine Spectator, where she referred to it as her “dream home.” However, PEOPLE detailed how while she was “once a fixture in her neighborhood, where she could be seen walking her dog daily, she ceased to be seen outside

“She lived in Brentwood for many years,” a source told the outlet. “She loved her neighborhood. Up until just a few months ago, she’d walk her dog every day. She was usually dressed the same, with a hat and her signature sunglasses regardless of the weather.”

“She was always very nice, funny and chatty. She’d talk to her dog like he was a person. She was eccentric and had this old-school Hollywood aura. She was very, very special,” they added.

  2. It’s so sad that she waited so long to adopt her children. Now they’re in their twenties and they’ve never known a father and their mother is now gone. They’re alone in the world except for one another. That’s got to be pretty lonely and scary for them. I’m praying for them to find strength to make it through through this difficult time. Of course I’m sad that Diane Keaton is gone, but her struggles are over and any pain has ended. Her children have to learn to navigate a world without her in it. That really sucks.
