Dexter, who has lived a fulfilling yet private life, has rarely spoken publicly about her family. Her post marked a rare moment of openness following her mother’s death, which was announced on October 11.
As per a report in People, a family spokesperson confirmed that Keaton died in Los Angeles at age 79 and asked for privacy as loved ones grieve.
Keaton’s Journey Into Motherhood
Best known for her Oscar-winning role in “Annie Hall,” Keaton embraced her most special role—motherhood a little later in life. Someone who has remained fiercely vocal about living life on her own terms adopted her two children while in her 50s.
She welcomed her daughter, Dexter, in 1996 and later adopted her son, Duke, who is now 25.
In a 2008 interview with Ladies’ Home Journal, Keaton spoke about motherhood.
“I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,” she said, as reported by US Weekly.
She added, “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist; it was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”
How Keaton Raised Her Children Away From the Spotlight

Keaton made a rare appearance with both her kids in August 2022, when they joyfully accompanied her to her Hand & Footprint Ceremony at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre.
When Keaton was asked what it meant to her, she answered: “Everything.” “I love them,” she added, as reported by People magazine in 2022.
