“RIP to one of America’s most graceful, elegant, and fiercely talented muses Diane Keaton who maintained a sense of self throughout her many roles that was a reminder to me as a young performer that the most interesting person you can mine are the many aspects of yourself,” one person wrote.

“So sorry to hear about Diane Keaton. I’ve always been a huge fan. Thank you for all the wonderful movies. You will be missed,” another fan commented.

“This one hurts so much: Farewell to one cinema’s greatest legends, the extraordinary Diane Keaton, who passed away at just 79. She has brought so much joy with her talent over the decades of unforgettable performances. R.I.P,” someone posted on social media.

Diane Keaton’s Most Famous Roles

Keaton made her debut in the 1970 film “Lovers and Other Strangers,” but it was in 1972 when she truly became a household name, starring  as Kay Adams-Corleone in “The Godfather.”

“I think the kindest thing that someone’s ever done for me … is that I got cast to be in The Godfather and I didn’t even read it. I didn’t know a single thing,” Keaton told PEOPLE in a 2022 interview. “I just was going around auditioning. I think that was amazing for me. And then I had to kind of read the book.”

She also worked with Woody Allen that same year, starring alongside him in the Broadway show “Play It Again, Sam.” She received a Tony nomination for this role.

Allen and Keaton went on to collaborate on eight films, including “Annie Hall,” for which Keaton won an Oscar in 1978.

She went on to star in numerous other projects, including being nominated for an Oscar a total of four times. After “Annie Hall,” she was nominated for best actress in “Reds” (1981), “Marvin’s Room” (1996), and “Something’s Gotta Give” (2003).

  2. She made me laugh, cry, and eager to find out everything about her. Woody Allen was spot on choosing Diane Keaton for several movies. I smile just thinking of her in Annie Hall.. the scene with her and Woody trying to cook a lobster 🦞.
