Former star of “The Bachelorette” Katie Thurston has been open about her journey while dealing with breast cancer. Currently on a treatment plan that has successfully been shrinking the tumors in her body, she’s revealed how she’s making life a little easier for herself.
“October was freaking nuts. It was Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Jeff [her husband] was gone the entire month, and then I also had my six-month check-in PET scan,” she explained in an Instagram video that she shared on Monday, November 3. “No spread; the breast MRI shows that the tumor is still shrinking.”
However, she added, “The thing I did not realize, every month-ish, I have to get my blood drawn. And I hate needles. I hate the time and emotional energy it takes to go to the hospital here in New York. It takes so much out of me.”
That’s why Katie decided to do something to make her “quality of life bearable.”
“This last blood draw, I actually hired a company — it was $149. And for me, it’s worth every penny,” she said. “And I know that comes from a place of financial privilege. But also as someone who’s going to be doing this forever, I have to make my quality of life — and I hate that word, it makes me want to cry — I have to make my quality of life bearable. And so for me, that was just one thing I did for myself to make my treatment feel less [expletive] up.”
Katie Might Be Making a Change to Her Treatment
Katie also revealed a change that her doctor might be making to her treatment plan.
“The oncologist did say we can hope to push for like every six weeks instead of every four weeks,” she said in the video. “She also just recently approved me to do a three-month Lupron shot instead of an every month Lupron shot. Which, if you don’t know, it’s an injection that suppresses your ovaries and it goes into your butt muscle or your thigh and it’s very painful.”
She added, “I didn’t realize I’m so sad right now. You just get tired.”
