Witherspoon sent a strong warning to her fans after a widespread scam has made her followers vulnerable.

“Hey, this is important. I want to just tell you what I’ve been dealing with for the past 24 hours,” Witherspoon said in a Wednesday, January 14, TikTok video. “There are multiple people on TikTok and Instagram impersonating me, and they go into people’s DMs, and they try to build a relationship. They try to extract personal information, plan meet-up times. I want you to know this is not me.”

The “Sweet Home Alabama” actress, 49, was visibly upset by the fraudsters, as she begged fans to be careful and vigilant.

“It’s so upsetting that people would use my name to manipulate people. But I want you to know that I would never ever manipulate you. I would never reach out to you for money, for private information, to create a meet-up time,” she continued. “So please look at these accounts that are doing this and make sure they’re verified. This is not just me, this is happening across the board, but it’s really upsetting to me that this is happening on such a large scale. So, please be careful out there and please know I would never never reach out to you to manipulate you or to take anything from you, okay?”

Other Stars Have Shared Similar Warnings

Unfortunately, Witherspoon is not the first celebrity to be impersonated by fraudsters.

Hallmark stars Tyler Hynes, Jonathan Bennett, Tamera Mowry, and BJ Britt, among others, shared a joint statement in October warning fans of online scammers.

“Hi friends! We care deeply about our fans and we have something very important to tell you,” the group began in a video shared via Instagram at the time. “There’s a growing industry-wide problem across social media. Fake (social media) accounts are impersonating actors, reaching out to fans directly with misleading messages.”

They continued, “It’s very important that you know. It’s important that you know we will never contact you personally
to ask for financial help, donations, or to meet up. If you receive a message like this, it’s a scam.”

The group urged viewers to block the suspicious accounts and report them to the platforms.

The video, which was shared to the official Hallmark Instagram page, added the caption, “We love our Hallmark family — and that means doing our part to raise awareness around scammers, some who are impersonating Hallmark stars. Learn how to spot the signs and protect yourself.”
