Joshua Jackson Gives Clever Response to Difficult Question About His Childhood

Joshua Jackson is going viral for how he handled a deeply personal question, and his response is resonating far beyond the red carpet.

While attending the premiere of “Brunello: The Gracious Visionary” in New York City, the “Dawson’s Creek” alum was asked about the best advice his father ever gave him. Instead of dodging the moment, Jackson laughed before answering candidly, “My father abandoned my family,” according to Page Six. He then reframed the question with a thoughtful perspective, adding, “The best piece of advice my father accidentally gave me in his absence is to be a good and present father.”

The unexpected response quickly sparked reactions online, with many praising the actor for turning a difficult moment into something meaningful.

A Difficult Past That Shaped His Perspective

Jackson has spoken openly about his childhood in the past, including the impact of his father’s absence. He previously described his parents’ split as a “very traumatic experience,” explaining that he, his sister and their mother had to rebuild on their own, per Page Six.

In April 2025, Jackson revisited that relationship during an appearance on the “Dinner’s On Me” podcast, where he revealed that becoming a father has shifted his perspective. “I find myself for the first time with a great deal of sympathy for him,” he said, reflecting on the emotional toll his father may have carried, per Us Weekly.

He added, “The pain that he must have lived with… to have four children in the world and essentially no relationship with any of them,” while also acknowledging that he cannot imagine experiencing that kind of distance from his own child.

Jackson described fatherhood as a “self-healing” experience, explaining that it has given him a deeper understanding of love and responsibility.

Focused on Fatherhood and Co-Parenting Today

Now a father to daughter Juno, whom he shares with ex-wife Jodie Turner-Smith, Jackson has been intentional about approaching parenting differently. He has emphasized the importance of being present, saying his role is to “nurture you, cultivate you, and give you all the tools that you need in life.”

Earlier this month, Jackson and Turner-Smith continued working toward finalizing custody arrangements for their daughter. According to People, the former couple has hired a private judge to help resolve remaining details after agreeing to joint custody following their 2025 divorce.

Despite some past disagreements, including concerns about schooling decisions, the two have been working toward a structured co-parenting plan outside of court.

Jackson’s recent red carpet moment ultimately tied back to that same focus on fatherhood. What started as an uncomfortable question turned into a clear reflection of how his past continues to shape his present.

As he put it, the lesson he carries forward is simple: “To be a good and present father.”
