“American Idol” season 21 winner Iam Tongi is taking to the streets to see how fans react to his newest single “Sugar.” The Hawaiian-born singer is dropping the single on September 19, but a lucky few got a sneak preview of the tune.
Tongi shared a video on Instagram in which he approached people on the street and played them his new song. “I’m gonna show you guys a song. Tell me your honest opinions, let’s go,” he said before playing the upbeat track.
The people appeared to love the new single, grooving along to the beat. Tongi looked super proud and enthusiastic at the reception “Sugar” was getting. He even shared the inspiration behind the song.
“So I wrote this song about my auntie,” Tongi said. “What she’s done for me … she means so much to me.” He then asked what the people thought of the tune and the feedback was positive across the board.
“Absolutely love it,” one fan said, and another remarked, “It’s good, it’s nice, I can feel it in my Mexican blood.” In unison a group shouted to the camera, “We love ‘Sugar!'” and another fan commented, “That is such a sweet track.”
Iam Tongi Has Been Promoting ‘Sugar’ in Fun Ways
In addition to asking fans for their opinion on his upcoming single, Tongi has been promoting “Sugar” in cute ways on social media. On September 12, the singer shared a post on Instagram featuring the title “Sugar” in big bubble letters with a bright orange background. “I seriously can’t wait for y’all to hear it,” he captioned the post.
On September 17, Tongi took to Instagram once again to post a video clip in which he is shown spooning a hearty amount of sugar into a coffee mug while singing along to the song. The lyrics for “Sugar” appear on the screen so fans can sing along too.
“Pre-save it now 🍭🤙🏽,” the “Idol” winner reminded fans in the caption.
Tongi Is Celebrating More Than Just ‘Sugar’
Tongi is clearly as excited as fans are for the release of his new jam. And the singer has even more to celebrate these days, as he gets ready to head out on a tour of the U.S. His first headlining tour kicks off on October 7 in Springfield, MO, and wraps up in mid-November in Minneapolis, MN.
The even better news is that Tongi is now in great physical shape as he prepares for all of his performances. In May, he revealed to People that he had dropped an astounding 115 lbs. with the help of a personal trainer. “It feels amazing. I feel great,” Tongi shared.
