“Dancing with the Stars” champion Jennifer Grey is stepping back into one of the most iconic roles of her career.
Nearly four decades after “Dirty Dancing” first hit theaters, Grey has confirmed she is returning as Frances “Baby” Houseman in the long-awaited sequel, which is officially moving forward at Lionsgate. The actress will also executive produce the film, marking a major milestone for fans who have waited years for a meaningful update on the project.
The sequel was first announced in 2022, but Lionsgate recently revealed that production is now being eyed to begin later this year, signaling real momentum after a long development stretch. According to Entertainment Weekly, veteran producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson have joined the project, bringing experience from films like “The Hunger Games” and “Crazy Rich Asians.”
In a statement, Grey reflected on what the role still means to her decades later. “The role of Baby has held a very deep and meaningful place in my heart, as it has in the hearts of so many fans over the years,” she said, adding that it took time to assemble a creative team she trusted to build on the original film’s legacy. “I’m excited to say that it looks like the wait will soon be over.”
What We Know About the Sequel So Far
The original 1987 film followed Baby, a sheltered young woman vacationing with her family at a Catskills resort, who unexpectedly falls for dance instructor Johnny Castle, played by Patrick Swayze. The movie became a cultural phenomenon, earning Grey a Golden Globe nomination and cementing its place as a defining romance of the era.
Swayze, who died in 2009, will not be part of the sequel, though Grey and the studio have emphasized honoring the spirit of the original film. While no additional casting has been announced, Grey previously teased on “The Drew Barrymore Show” that she would love to see Harry Styles involved and promised the sequel would still include dancing, music and romance.
The screenplay is being written by Kim Rosenstock, known for her work on “Only Murders in the Building” and “Dying for Sex,” and Jonathan Levine is attached as an executive producer. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson said the studio was intentional about assembling a creative team capable of respecting the original while introducing the story to a new generation.
Fans React and Jennifer Grey’s Full-Circle Moment
News of Grey’s return sparked an immediate reaction online. While many fans celebrated seeing Baby back on screen, others expressed hesitation about revisiting such a beloved film without Swayze. Social media reactions ranged from emotional nostalgia to cautious curiosity, with longtime viewers protective of the original story and its iconic pairing, according to the Daily Mail.
Still, Grey’s involvement appears to be a reassuring factor for fans who want the sequel handled with care. Her return also feels full circle for viewers who watched her reclaim the spotlight years after “Dirty Dancing,” including her memorable run on “Dancing With the Stars.”
Grey competed on Season 11 of “Dancing With the Stars” alongside professional dancer Derek Hough and went on to win the competition in 2010, overcoming injuries and exhaustion along the way. The victory reintroduced her to a new audience and reaffirmed her connection to dance, a key element of the “Dirty Dancing” legacy.
With production expected to begin soon, Grey’s return as Baby signals that the next chapter of “Dirty Dancing” is finally taking shape. As she put it herself, the wait to revisit Baby’s story “will soon be over.”
